This is what our future holds in store for us.

That makes so many good points.

They say knowledge is power and it perfectly illustrates what is going to happen when you are some poor sap in the omni-database, as opposed to being the PIA who operates it and plays around with you as a cat would with a mouse.

Plenty of our politicians wouldn't get this at all. They would just think it splendid and scratch their heads that anybody could see a problem with it.

Funny, and I mean both kinds. This reminds me of a short film that came out when ATMs were new. A guy puts his card in, and the machine starts asking him what he did with the last $40, and how did he buy the new watch without approval. The machine starts to gets jealous when he suspects he needs money for a date.

I'd would be really caught off guard with something like this, I mean who ever gets more than a few grunts on the other end of the phone from their local pizza joint. Wow, that kind of command of the language? I'd be stunned.

The key point made is that we are heading for a world where a ludicrous amount of information about you is shared unnecessarily with even the lowest level of authority holding employee.

And they haven't earned or been given any authority over you. It just arises from them being seated in front of the ultra-database - and you're not.

We don't have to vote for this situation for it to come into being. It happens automatically because it is intrinsic to on-line  database technology - just like pornography proved to be almost intrinsic to video and stills photography and we were "blessed" with it the moment the camera was invented, without there being any original intent to bring it about.

I hear ya!. I got the point, it's just too depressing to contemplate- especially if we can't really do anything about it. Don't all emerging technologies have their good and bad applications? We all benefit from the energy producing reactions of fission, but we sure hate the kowtowing to potentially weaponized regimes on the other end. On a smaller note, I example refuse to get one of those EZ Pass transponders that would allow me to go through toll roads without stopping. I don't want to be tracked that much, and I don't think we should get disconnected such that we forget how much we are paying each time. However, the convenience would be nice for those summertime New Hampshire tolls.........

Well if you don't have a points based ignition vehicle you may be in trouble soon.  Technology is being developed for law enforcement to kill your engine so you can't flee.  Point based ignition will be untouched.  Thank the stars for Lucas points.  Will.

Yikes! Seriously? Can't even find the spark plugs in my subaru ;)

Makes me want to watch Lee Majors in The Last Chase again. Not a great movie, but it's more upbeat than Brazil, which we are closing in on every day.

  BINGO!!!

They know your driving habits, normal routine, where you go at any given time.  They can even tell when you have a service due.  Can they shut you off of need be.  I think you get the picture.  And we haven't even seen the more updated version yet, all you guys that want all that high speed..low drag equipment (GPS etc.) have a tail wherever you go already.  Will.

In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the overload of information is so great it will be of little use to those who might be tempted to use it.  I think we're safe enough.

The problem I see with someone else shutting down the ignition is that might well place us in a difficult situation, safety wise.

Well, porn is intrinsic to any kind of technology, mechanical or not. Think of all those fleshy pink nudes hanging on the walls of the British Museum, the dionysian ecstasies that animate Grecian vases, the curvacious statues lying in wait at the Jardin des Tuilleries. Porn is everywhere, and it is watching us.

Agreed that it would/could/may cause safety issues may/may not be at the fore front of thought at the time.  Yes the sytem is overloaded with meaningful/less information and that factor alone should keep us safe for a while.  Let's face it, big brother already knows what he wants to know.  It all depends on what springs them into using the compiled data.  Will.

Yep, I would rather shake the Lucas dice when I pull out to overtake (something slow) than be exposed to the possibility of a law enforcement officer punching my ID number into his stop-o-matic box by mistake.

poutineyum: my second post in this thread looks like I am lecturing you. It is actually worse than that as I was sounding off some more without even reading the next person's post properly - which is very bad etiquette. My apologies. Mrs Chasfield had given me a glass of wine, so alcohol is to blame.

Found out a while back how much the police really know at a traffic stop.  All the officer wanted to see was that I had my drivers license on my person.  He stopped me for a burned out tail light bulb.  They don't even ask for registration unless the drivers/registrants names don't match from the data base.  And I don't live in an area where we are that advanced in technology.  Fixed the bulb on the spot and went on my way. as I left I knew they know more than that from a glance at the computer screen.  Will.

Well, technology can be used for good or bad.
And it always has.

So, I think that stuff like this actually is most revealing about the people that use the technology, and how they use it.
It actually reveals more about them, than the people that they are surveilling and recording.

There are methods available by warrant, to surveil a suspect when it can be proven to a judge that there is a strong suspicion with at least some evidence that a person is engaging in nefarious activities.
That person is called a suspect.
By using broad all-encompassing warrantless surveillance, that is essentially admitting the fact that EVERYBODY is considered a potential suspect and "needs to be watched".

ONLY tyrants do activities like that. No normal freedom-loving individual would even consider such practices. It doesn't matter what "excuses" or "weasel words" that they use to "justify" such practices. Those people who approve and employ such tactics on a general population are de-facto tyrants, whether they want to admit it or not.

And if you want to understand the beginnings  of such a mind-set by officials, it may be instructive to investigate the official act by FDR, called "The Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917,as amended in 1933".
In 1917, Wilson signed a law which dictated various types of monitoring, limitations on activities, and licensing, of people who were of certain national origins that might be suspected of "trading with the enemy" during WW1.
In 1933, FDR decided to "amend" that act to include EVERY citizen of the US. In effect, declaring the entire population to be the "enemy of the state", and subjecting them to the same laws that were previously used only on suspected "enemies".
This occured right after the citizens' money(gold) was confiscated and "replaced" with devalued paper currency by the Federal Reserve.
And the rest is history, as they say.
The gov't declared war on the people in 1933, and have been at war with the people ever since. But in keeping with the Fabian-style strategy, it has been a war of deception that slowly lulled people into accepting more and more incursions into their lives, over a long period of time, culminating in the eventual desired result which we are getting very close to today. The scheme is still in effect.

so when i was a contractor with the largest u.s. fitness equipment company, i did a service call in ohio on an organic farm. the owner told me a story that involved his buddy, a dnr officer.

the officer showed this guy some ginseng that was in his trunk. the officer waved a hendheld electronic device over the ginseng, hit a button and the display showed the s/n for the plant and the date it was planted. this was all designed to catch poachers. the ginseng roots were dipped in a chemical and planted by the dnr as decoys.

now think about the food we eat, the drugs and mandatory vaccines we take. what about the information gathered through such a process and combine it with satellite technology. big bro is more than watching.

of course, i have been called a conspiracy theorist.
