Bit concerning that the front sprocket was knackered after only 9000 miles.  When I bought my second Norton 750 Atlas (first one was stolen) in 1974 it was 10 years old, with an unknown mileage (folk changed clocks without a thought in those days).  The only chain maintenance I ever did was boiling it up in Duckhams grease; no fancy O or X ring chains in those days.  Went all over Europe two-up with camping gear 3 times, plus all over UK.  Never even thought of changing the chain or sprockets  :D   Divorce put an end to riding it in 1983.

Trouble is we all have our different definitions of knackered. I’m sure it would have been fine for 2 or 3000 miles, but while I was in there and with a 1500 to 2000 mile trip coming up I decided it was better changed than not.

Never boiled up anything in grease, but then I’m too young for all that nonsense 😂😂

As far as I know, Hitchcocks used to supply the endurance caliper and master cylinder in a kit to convert the old front drum brake to a disc setup.
I think the endurance pads are the same as the more common ByBre ones?

350 J Platform / Classic 350, full service, some thoughts

Now well into its second year and just over 9000 miles, it’s been time to go right through my Classic 350 to get it ready for my forthcoming tour from Spain up though France to Normandy.

New chain and sprockets. I could have gotten away with it, but the chain was definitely looking ropey after this last winter. The rear sprocket could have gone at least as far again, but the front sprocket was well worn. Getting the front one off was a pain, and that’s with a 450lbft windy hammer. The Honda system of two small screws is much better in my opinion. I would highly recommend not using the gearbox to stop the output shaft moving. I asked a friend to stand on the brake pedal. It’s only the old chain that’ll suffer, I hope.
I used a JTS chain and had to use the clip link as the rivet link was too hard and just fractured without spreading. I’m confident I’ve done enough of these and I have really good quality tools for the job. I’ll definitely get a DID chain next time.
Changing the air filter was a doddle, I use the standard one.
Changing the oil filter was equally straightforward. Filling up with oil is a bit fiddly as I did a full drain, I find it easier to put 2l in then run it, stop, leave it for 10 minutes for a brew then add all or part of the last 200ml to bring it up to the right level in the sight glass.
Getting in and checking the valves is a faff, although my petrol tank connector released easily, which I know they don’t always. Once I was in there, the valves themselves were fine after the last 6000 miles and needed no adjustment. With a new cam cover gasket and seals for the retaining screws, it went back together pretty easily.

I have always done my own maintenance, on all my bikes. This is one of the fiddly ones, although doing the shims on my CRF250 rally at 10,000 miles was more difficult to get in and out to do it, the shims on that bike were easy to do compared to some others.

Roll on 26th of May.

350 J Platform / Re: Random intermittent jerks - high RPM, 4th gear
« Last Post by wojtek_pl on Today at 07:09:35 am »
Hi team,

Just got back from 300 km ride. Mostly good but something new has come up.

The motorcycle appears to be getting these random jerks every now and again. The kind you would get in a carburettor when the jets were blocked or something. Like its missing a beat. And then again.

But why is happening to an EFI engine? The motorcycle wws serviced about 150 kms or ago - oil and everything, too!

Observed this most when in the 4th gear, pulling up a hill or something. Initially thought might be the rev limiter. But no, it's surely not that.

No engine check light etc.

Thoughts?

Thanks, heaps!
Same here. Happend when accelerating, not hard and far from rev limiter. Yes, uphill slightly too. Tank more than half full, good fuel (I hope)
I guess some Meteros are cursed...

Hi Taurim, thanks for the comment. I hear what you say about an adhesive, but it doesn’t matter, the filter and the silicone are in compression so it can never come off, it’s there purely to position it and to make sure air goes through the filter. Here’s a couple of pictures of it in position. The 4 securing bolts have spacers between the cap and the airbox so the filter is slightly compressed, but I can never over-tighten it.

I’ve now just about finished the guard for the exhaust. It’s a piece of stainless steel exhaust I got from eBay for £10. An hour with my angle grinder and linishing disks and I’ve ended up with the bit in the pics. It picks up on the downpipe mount and the front, rear engine plate mount. Being stainless, it will polish up to a good shine. I might just extend it rearwards a little, but wait until I’ve got my rearsets on first.

Happy to see some outside the box thinking mate!
Nice job. Fastened down nicely compared to the paper one held on with zip-ties I see circulating around.

Love the mill. I'm about to pick u a old Swedish Tool room mill. Ab Aboga Maskina.

You've posted a video for the Continental GT535 air kit.

This is the Electra X section.

Correct me if I'm wrong but he may be chasing the old "Ace Air Canister" from the Iron Barrel/Electra X Fireball 535.
Which I haven't see for years.

eBay has a ton of RE bar-end mirrors but non of the caps are properly keyed.  I did find these from Hitchcocks that are keyed.  I thought there was USA Hitchcock supplier but I’m not finding it now.

Here's an RV for the huddled masses...$1500 new.
Looks like it may have a double roof, like the old Land Rovers did to keep the sun from baking the passengers.
If it's actually chain drive you could gear it down to climb a bit more grade.
Looks like a good use of old 2WD quads & trikes, maybe even old hydrostatic drive lawn mowers, those all have reverse. ;D
