Title: Anyone else get oil/grease splattered onto their silencer?
Post by: LotusSevenMan on June 20, 2008, 07:20:12 pm
Comes from the gearbox area and ends up landing on the silencer and making a mess.
Horrible burned on brown stains.  >:(
The answer is ???????

"Mother's" polish (or potion of your choice) and lots of elbow grease. :)

I don't have a problem removing it, just don't want to have to that's all!!!!
Damn nuisance arriving with chrome looking like that.

I get some oil on my rear rim (not the tire/tyre fortunately) from the duckbill breather.

The only thing I can think of that would leak onto the muffler might be the gear box.

Have you checked to see if you are getting excess gearbox lube into the outer cover, which doesn't have a gasket?

Something like this LSM?  At first I thought that my shock was leaking but then I put it down to the oil seal on my magneto drive, but if you are getting it too then maybe I need to take a closer look.

I also have an early version of the "duck bill" breather that results in some splatter on the rear wheel rim.  I don't think that is what is getting on the muffler though.

If yours is an AVL, then possibly you've overfilled the oil and it is leaking out the air filter side "faux tool box".

No, it's a 2003 Classic.

SRL 790.
Yes, very similar. Mine is like that and just on the beginning of the bulge of the rear exhaust where is joins the thinner exhaust pipe.
That is probably because using a small sports exhaust I found that the join between exhaust pipe and the silencer was rather small. I therefore have fitted my silencer support on the pannier support fixing just forward of the original location point. Gives much better silencer to exhaust pipe intergration but moves the start of the bulge further forward!
I think if you run your hand under the g/box then you'll feel the oil there as a slight film.
Think you'll find your damper and magneto seals are fine!!!
