Title: Bulbous part on crankcase

On the right side of the crankcase of my Bullet there is an odd, bulbous thing that juts up and back. It does not appear to go anywhere. I can't find anything in my owners' manual or Snidal to explain it.

Can someone tell me what it's called, and what it does? Thanks!

You might be talking about the timing "horn" that sticks up there, and the timing cover is part of it.
That was where the distributor used to reside on the old models, and the distributor drive gears were inside there.
When they designed the AVL, apparently there was a decision made to retain that part for appearance, so that it looked more like the old bikes.

 The Iron Barrel and AVL were produced at the same time and use the same crank cases castings. With a little machine work they can be interchanged between the two engine types.

 The bulbous part in question mounts ignition "distributor" and houses its drive gears in Iron Barrel applications.
