Went down with a friend to the Northern Neck on Monday afternoon to do a little Stripper fishing Tuesday. My place was closed for the season so I stayed at his place and went out with another friend on his boat. They all have places near mine and actually I was the one who introduced them to the Northern Neck. Lower Potomac River near where it enters the bay.
Tuesday morning was beautiful..

On the way out the creek we came upon all these work boats all bunched up. I realized they were tonging oysters. The area they were allowed to work was only about 5 acres. The area was marked by flags on poles and a marine resources officer was there to make sure they didn't go outside the flagged area. In 8 days they got 5000 bushels out of there. I know one of the watermen working it and talked to him yesterday afternoon about it.

Found birds working and started catching bang..bang..bang... This is the ones we kept.

In the afternoon the fog set in so bad we couldn't see 50 feet.. Unfortunately my friends gps was on the blink so we ran the 30 miles back by compass and charts.
All and all a good day and was going to do it Wednesday also but the wind came up in the night and small craft advisories we posted so we didn't go out.
Hope to do it again after XMas...

WOW ....... What's that shiny stuff in that low spot in the picture? LIQUID WATER??? We don't have that in Minny-SOH-duh in December .... You got to chop a hole in the water here to catch them fishes, yet ..... eh? ::)

So how did you prep the fish? They look tasty...

Filleted most but kept a couple whole. Gonna bake one tonight with just salt, pepper, and lemon slices. I never try to over season Rock Fish as they are best with the least amount of seasoning. You can put lump crab meat on the fillets and broil.

Been going down to my place on the water for 25 years and have learned navigation and compass headings from running at night and only having depth/fish finders. I have added a Grady White Center Console to my fleet this year and it has a color depth/fish/GPS combined unit and I am spoiled. It can take you back from anywhere and always be right on track. I still don't just look at it go but keep a keen eye out for changes and watermen who like to run without lights at night. Fish traps with no lights are a real danger when running at night also.

For those of us who inland flatlanders, what's a rock fish? They looked like strippers to me. The one on the right seemed full of eggs. Are the salties different? Personally, most likely because of inland lakes, I never keep a sow with eggs.

No roe this time of year.. They were full of bunkers (Menhaden) and had fat reserves that looked like white tubes a couple of inches wide inside their bodies. They feed heavy this time of year to build up those fat reserves.

Very nice indeed. we have great fishing down here to, in fact it's what I do for a living. I run a 24ft Skeeter bay in the Louisiana coastal marshes and bays. Primarily , we catch Redfish (Channel Bass up your way?) and Speckled Seatrout.
here's a pic from a recent trip on a tough chilly and windy day. we are really blessed with an awesome inshore fishery in South Louisiana.
I have always wanted to catch a Striper though, well done!

We get some really big Reds sometimes too. My friend Greg had this beast on light tackle a few months ago, beat my personal best, dammit!

We get reds in the summer up our way and Black Drum also. Croaker,Spot, and Weak Fish are member of the Drum family also. We bottom fish for spot and croaker a lot here. Have a good run of Spanish Mackerel also. Blue Fish are also making a comeback.
The spring run of Stripers is the best with some catches running 60 lbs. and greater.This is a friend with a smaller one caught this spring. That day all the fish caught were that size or better.
