Well, the factory seems to be doing rather well at making all the speedos read 10% fast.

I wonder why they can't just get the same consistency in making them read correctly?

Obviously, they make the speedos' all the same.
Do they actually not realize that they are all wrong?
Or don't they care?

A lot less warranty claims on seized pistons during the break-in.

Well, that would make sense.
I hadn't thought about it from that angle.

The Electra: 10%
My Honda: 10%
My BMW: 8%
Seems to be an industry thing. Some time back, when I had to spend a lot of windshied time for work, I would check the accuracy of the company cars (Ford Taurus, Dodge Intrepid, Chevy ?) those speedometers were also off by 5 - 10%.
The interstate system has mile markers. using a stopwatdh, timing a distance like 12 miles, and calculating the speed would give a fairly accurate indication of the error. I used the cruise control to help maintain a constant speed. Also, I noted that the odometer usually had the same degree of error, thus slightly improving the appearant mileage.

It's amazing how off we can discover speedometers to be now.
I've had a VW car that was also off by nearly 10km/h.
My GM made car, Pontiac, is pretty accurate... assuming my GPS is accurate, which it should be.
My RE is 10km/h off... and over-confident, and so was my last bike - a suzuki.
In my opinion there is no excuse for them being off... it is very simple mathematics relating to the size of the front wheel.

Interestingly, the speedo on my FJ is actually less accurate than the Enfield was.

I took rode it today to see an old friend and his family and brought my bike GPS to check the speedo accuracy. Below 70mph the speed was reading about 5 mph high, bot over 70 the discrepancy was more like 9-10 mph high.

Somehow I expected better from a 1989 Japanese bike.
