Everyone knows a JAWA is only a real JAWA if it is a 2 stroke and has a twin piston, single combustion chamber head in it.

Replacing the 2 stroke with a 4 stroke doesn't quite cut it for me.

Whing-ding-ding-ding, ding.  :)
I wasn't aware that Jawa ever made split singles, but they did make fourstrokes, back in the day.

Puch made the split-single engines. Puch motorcycles were sold by Sears during the late 1950's and early 1960's under their Allstate brand.  Sears called the design "twingles". They had one crankshaft, two pistons, one combustion chamber, one carburetor and two exhaust ports. Pictures attached of the Sears bikes.

I owned a well-used 1958 Allstate 125 for a few years before it finally turned into a pile of debris.   ::)

Years ago in India I owned a 350 Twin Jawa, (licensed in India as a Yezdi). It was the poor Indians Yamaha RD350. Other than the RD, it was the only twin cyl bike back then in the 90s and probably till HD entered India in the late 2010s.

The high point for me was that the crank could sometimes turn backwards when kicked. Ive ridden backwards into cars behind me at traffic lights (where I used to turn the engine off to save fuel... broke college kid back then).  Shut off, restart and push forward before engaging first gear and it would run fine enough to escape the angry car owners. They couldve traced me if they followed the smoke though. Those 2 strokes were chimneys.

My girlfriend would only pillion on the Jawa, never liked my 65 CC Puch, for some reason. I rode the Jawa for the first 10 days of the month while my meager allowance lasted. Then onto the Puch to last out the month.

Terrible engineering, the battery would start discharging with the headlight on for more than a few minutes.

But it must've been charming enough. The girls been married to me for the last 17 years.

Identical to the one here. http://technwheelz.com/featured-posts/classic-tales-1986-yezdi-350-twin-mukund-ayyangar/?unapproved=8160&moderation-hash=62ede9e82505f94d48124c5138dbc9b2#comment-8160

Yah.  I screwed up.
Richard 230's comment jogged a cog in my mind so now I remember.  Puch made the twingle.

Frogman8, it wasn't the bike that charmed her.

In October 2016 Mahindra purchased the BSA name for use on motorcycles and were expected to have something out by the middle of this year. Didn't happen, as we know. I think they've probably been pouring resources into the Jawa brand. I wouldn't expect any BSA from Mahindra to be very retro.

Bob

Mahindra also purchased Pininfarina, the Italian design house, and supposedly they are doing the engineering on the new BSA (s). However, with Jawa experiencing substantial quality issues, from what I have read, I would not touch one of the new BSA bikes for 2 or 3 years after production starts. And the Mahindra CEO resently stating that he wished he had not gotten into the motorcycle business does not give me any warm fuzzies.

The problem with India is not from the designers that they outsource or purchase, generally speaking.
What happens typically is that they source a design from a reputable design company, and then when they produce it they gut all the quality out of it with cheap materials and poor workmanship.
This was the story with Enfield for so many years. Only recently are they starting to pull out of that behavior, and I haven't seen enough to be sure that they have emerged from it completely.

All bikes have their idiosyncrasies.  :P I have been happy to set my 2015 C5 up pro-actively, and am very happy with it.  ;) From what I understand, I could've paid a hell of a lot more and gotten a lot more grief with other brands. No complaints here!  8)

Just to be clear, I am not trying to rain in anyone's parade.
Just reporting my observations after being inside a lot of these things. Most things are correctable.
Maybe the twins are okay. Haven't worked on any of them.

I would love to own a 500 RE Thunderbird. Over the years I have email RENA many times about when they might be available here in the US. Not once have I ever gotten a response of any kind. :-( I would like to have the option of a tack and tubeless tires.

I really like the looks of Jawa and would own the the new Classic and the Bobber if they were to be available here in the US. But their is nothing like a RE 500 single. The character, the sole of this bike, is like nothing else on the market. I love the sound of the values, the beautiful thump that comes out the the back, and the feel of every stroke of the piston going up and down. Yes, I like all that vibration. It’ fun to ride, all of it making me feel alive and apart of the machine. Their many other bikes out their but they are like riding a boring appliances comparison. I will be very sad if RE ever discontinues making this model.
REs I currently own:
2007 AVL Bullet Electra Gray
2010 Bullet G5 Deluxe Black
2017 535 GT Continental Red
2018 Himalayan White
2018 Pegasus Green
2024 650 Super Meteor Celestial Blue

The "official announcement" of the discontinuation of the 500 Bullet and Thunderbird took the form of dropping them from availability in RE online bookings.  For the moment the Classic 500 is still available.

If you don't have a 500 single in your garage, the next few months may be a good time to visit your friendly neighborhood RE dealer.

Maybe this means they will bring the 350's to the international markets at a lower cost?

Yes, but with the new classic 350's, with abs and efi are now Euro 4/5 compliant, so they can sell them in europe and the us if they want to.

The US stopped importing the 350 in the 1990s because nobody here wanted them.
