Title: Anybody interested in a Blue Ridge Parkway Get-together next spring????
Post by: dewjantim on August 05, 2007, 07:02:40 pm
If anybody is interested we could meet at the "High Country Campground" a few miles off the parkway on Rt. 421. Its never too early to start planning. My bike would do great on the parkway, just thumpin' along at 45 mph, enjoying the scenery. What do you think???? Let me know.....Dew.

What state is that in?

I think what he's talking about is the "British in the Blue Ridge" festival held in Hiawassee on the Georgis/Tennessee border. I plan on attending with some of the guys from the Triumph shop where I bought my Electra. The owner of the dealership said it is a great time. I will start planning pretty soon. I understand the festival reserves the entire camp ground, so I will want to reserve my spot early. I just hope someone is coming along with a support vehicle so I don't  have to haul all my camp gear.

Nope, thats not it. Sounds like fun though. This campground is between Boone and North Wilksboro in NC off RT421. Lots of back-roads and the Blue Ridge Parkway (one of the best biking roads in the world) is just about 10 minutes away.  Speed limit is mostly 45 mph and is perfect for cruising on our REs. High country campground is a motorcycle only camp and is a really good place to stay, play, and/or party. So, who wants to go in say......late May of 2008? Give me a shout.......Dew.

Well, there is 3 of us, how about the rest of you. Nice roads, slower speeds, beautiful scenery, cheap camping (or rent the bunkhouse), and those nice, ever present park rangers. Sounds like a good time to me. Will post this again when the time nears....Dew.

I wish there were more events like this closer to where i live, but that won't happen. Here in NW Florida the roads are too straight and there are few hills. I would love to fine some local RE riding partners however.

I thought maybe that some of us could meet at Fancy Gap Virginia and ride the BRP down to Boone, then go to the campground. Perhaps the guys coming from the south could meet at Ashville and ride up the parkway to Boone. What do you think? Dew.

Its a pretty long cruise to the Dragon from the parkway. I do know of a road called "The Snake" on Rt 421 which is as good or better than the Dragon. Just as many curves, better road surface, less cops, and less traffic. It ends at Shady Valley where a gas station/country store is located. They have food, gas, t-shirts, etc. Try looking up Shady Valley on youtube to get a better look......Dew.

Thats a pretty good run from the Dragon.  If I could "work in the time off" it all sounds like a great ride and lots of fun.  I wouldn't know until into 2008 though.  Keep the plan in place Dew, it will all work out if you stay with it.

I did a Blue Ridge trip last week on my Bonneville.  I camped at Rider's Roost (http://www.ridersroost.com/index2.html) in Fergusen, NC (near North Wilkesboro),  then the Blue Ridge Motorcycle Campground (http://www.blueridgemotorcyclecamp.com/), Cruso, NC, then Iron Horse Lodge (http://www.ironhorsenc.com/) near Deal's Gap and last night at Two Wheels Only (http://www.twowheelsonly.com/) in Suches, Georgia.

All the these places cater specifically to motorcycles and offer cabins and tent camping.

I also stopped for a visit at the Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley (http://www.wheelsthroughtime.com/), which I highly recommend.

This made for a round trip of about 850 miles (with a few side trips) from my house in Northeast Georgia.

These are just some suggestions.  If I can get out of work I'm game for anywhere along the Blue Ridge.

Dew,

There seems to be some pretty good interest here. When you have more details etched out, drop a note to Dorothy (dorothy@enfieldmotorcycles.com) (our very own humble scribe) and maybe we can mention it and give some sign-up information in our community newsletter.

That reaches several thousand people these days and helps us promote many of our own rides and events.

I loved the museum in Maggie Valley. Most , if not all, of the bikes there are ready to run. The employees were super nice and would tell the history of any bike there if you were interested. I met Dale and his son and just talking to them was worth the $10.00 admission fee. Dale even started a 1914 (I think) Harley for us. Did you see all the rubber marks on the floor? One of the guys working there said Dale made those with the immaculate Crocker which resides there......he said it was worth $300,000....gasp. Neat place, nice people, lots of cool bikes and some beautiful old cars also. Everybody should go there and see it at least once......Dew.

I agree about the museum.  I was helping Dale to get one running and ended up leaving with a free T-shirt, a poster, and a free pass for my next visit.  Dale even gave me the workshop tour.

Dale, and his staff, just have so much energy and enthusiasm it is infectious.  They will cater to a group but that is a little far from Boone for a day trip.  Maybe the next year.

According to Mapquest you are about 4 1/2 hours east of Fancy Gap Va. That is by taking interstate a big part of the way. I live in Ky and it will take about 3 1/2 hours interstate, or about 5 - 6 hours on the backroads through West Virginia......Dew.

Go to www.highcountrymotorcyclecamp.com and have a look at the campground outside of Boone NC just a few miles off Rt 421. Tell me what you think. I have stayed here many, many times. It is situated in a valley which has a nice brook and lots of trees for shade. Brent Holowell, the owner, is a long time motorcyclist. I met him there at a BMW rally when the camp was owned by someone else (Turkey Tom). As you can see on the website there is also a house available if you wish to have more privacy and dont want to sleep on the ground. Also there is a bunkhouse if you dont want to camp......Dew.

I called Brent at the High Country Campground  the other day to make reservations for another trip I am planning in a couple of weeks. I mentioned to him that we were thinking about a get-to-gether there this spring on, or about,  the last week of May. He is very interested and will provide meals if we can get enough people to come. Will talk more with him while there and will try and firm everything up next Feb. Will keep you posted......Dew.

I talked to Brent a while back, he said we would be more than welcome. Will firm up the dates in March. A group of 8 of us stayed there last month. We rented the bunkhouse and it was a blast. Brent even cooked us a delicious breakfast with fruit, juice, coffee, eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, and fried potatoes. Just the thing for a long day of riding.....Dew.

How far did you ride on the Parkway?  Did you ride from Eastanollee, GA?  Looks like a great time.  What is the weather like this time of year?
Title: Re: Anybody interested in a Blue Ridge Parkway Get-together next spring????
Post by: SRL790 on November 06, 2007, 06:13:15 pm
I only rode about 30 miles on the Parkway itself from the intersection at route 215 (mile marker 424) to Maggie Valley.  The day's round trip from Eastanollee was about 250 -300 miles but since my speedometer quit the day before I can't be more accurate than that.

The weather yesterday was beautiful and sunny although a little chilly (ice hanging off the rocks in the shady spots) above 5000 feet.  Weather is very hard to predict at this time of year but it is the premium time to see the fall colors.

Krodaddy,

Haven't been checking in much lately - too busy - otherwise I would have answered sooner.  Yes I am still interested, but has anyone heard from Dew lately?  Last I heard he had a heart transplant and was eating lots of beans.

If we don't get together for this trip you and I are close enough to meet up and go riding somewhere, say the gas station at 11 and 178.  Anyone else in the area interested?

I just tuned in (FNG), so would like to know what happened to the meeting on the BRP.  There is a Beemer rally in Boone, NC sometime in August, I believe.  They let any type of bike in--once saw 4 Munch's from the '70's there.  Anyway, that might make a good fallback time if nec.  Otherwise, would love to ride down and meet with you guys!  Ed from DC.

Welcome to the forum Ritter.

I work wierd hours and we are a guy short right now, which makes my schedule somewhat unpredictable but I'll try to get things rolling here.

Original plan was to meet at the High County Campground, near North Wilkesboro/Boone, NC. and that is fine with me.

The only real planning needed is to pick a weekend and a campsite, and give them a heads up on how many.  It would probably be best to let people make their own camping/cabin reservations.

Looking at my schedule, the weekend of May 31st would be my first choice.

Everybody put in your choice for date and location and lets see if we can get this thing kick started.

Andy

Hey all. i'm another FNG to this stuff. Got my AVL 3 weeks ago and I live about 2 miles from the BRP in Virginia. I also work weird hours and find it hard to get time off, but this sounds pretty awesome to me. There's a place called Willville campground at the Meadows of Dan that's a right popular motorcycle destination...but then again what isn't along the BRP?

Well guys, I kind of dropped the ball on this one. It was originally my idea for the BRP ride and camp. Was supposed to have been the middle of May at my friend Brent's' High Country Campground. I contacted Brent and he said he would love to have us. Unfortunately, not long after that my heart quit working, well almost anyway. After four visits to four different hospitals I received a new heart on Jan 3. Have been out of the hospital for about three months now. Have not (until the last few weeks) recuperated as quickly as I thought I would, so...........I haven't followed up on the get together. As Ritter said, there is a BMW rally in Boone in August, there is also an airhead BMW rally not far from Boone on June 13-15. I'm sure that we would be welcome there also. I have been an airhead for many years and know Charlie Smith, the guy putting on the rally.  If there is enough interest, I will contact him to see if he minds having a few Hindu bikes as guests.........Dew.

Dew, I'm sorry to read about that.  :( Hope you are okay.

My wife spent a good chunk of her childhood in NC and wants me to ride the Parkway with her. We would probably trailer our bikes down behind the motorhome. Could easily join up with other riders if we knew the date far enough in advance.

Well of course we're all just mad as hornets about you "dropping the ball". Man, I hope YOU are doing better. The Parkway ain't goin' nowhere, and a little extra time to break in the bike works for me.

If anyone is interested, there is a Brit bike ralley in my neck of the woods every year at Glen Maury Park in beautiful Buena Vista, Virginia. I'm sure we would be welcome with that crowd as well. They also hold a sidecar rally there every year if any of you have a hack. Buena Vista isn't Mount Mitchell, but it's only a short jaunt to the Skyline Drive.

Hey Matt, you are welcome anytime, so are the rest of you. Just give me a heads up when you are coming.  Lots of great roads around here in Ky. , Ohio, and West Virginia.  Oh yeah, Ridgerunner, I've been to Glen Maury Park and Buena Vista several times. Its about 5 or 6 miles from the BRP. The mountain is a great place to coast race. Turn off your engine at the top and race into town four miles down the mountain. It's really a hoot. I passed a V-max on my R90S BMW (wish I still had it) doing seventy with the engine off. It scared him so bad he almost ran in the ditch. Ridgerunner, let us know when the rally is this year and I will try to go.......Later.....Dew.

Dew,

Good to hear from you again.

Keep on recoverin'!

Maybe we should all thump over to your place for a visit!

Matt

I know the annual airhead rally is August 7-9. If I hear of when the Ural or Brits in the Blue Ridge rallies are, I'll post them.

If anybody is interested we could meet at the "High Country Campground" a few miles off the parkway on Rt. 421. Its never too early to start planning. My bike would do great on the parkway, just thumpin' along at 45 mph, enjoying the scenery. What do you think???? Let me know.....Dew.
While not a current RE owner, I plan to be in the immediate future. I'd be QUITE interested in a Spring Rally! I am not a camper, tho, and would like motel-it nearby. I live just over the mountain in greater Knoxville. Keep me posted! RMLSOTMHG@CHARTER.NET.
