Why did you change it?

I've heard stories of fuel delivery problems due to paint flakes, but I have never encountered them, even though my bike has 16K on it now.

Personally and at the price 2 yrs ago (Au$40) I have it sitting "Just in case" along with clutch cable etc that came with the bike. Seems the tank paint blocking isn't THAT prevalent, but the cleaning up and filter design suggest just easier to change the unit as damage to orig quite likely........

HI Stephan, one of those stories was from me, when huge globs of royal maroon paint ruined my last 1,000 ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It ended with my bike on a flat bed truck for the last 45 miles or so. But the last 150 miles before that was not a lot of fun. I had to kick start my bike over 200 kicks and bent the kick starter enough that I needed a new one. And it was 95 degrees that day.

to 9-fingers: I was thinking about a rider I knew from NYC.  His failed on a trip back from Boston.  He eventually had to depaint and repaint the tank.  Did you also do that?

HI Stephan, the inside of my tank LOOKS like it is chrome with paint over it......which all peeled off obviously. Or at least most of it peeled off.
I see no reason to recoat the inside of the tank as none of my other steel tanked bikes, some 50 years old at this point, have corrosion issues. If I were not lazy, or didn't have 53 other things that need doing, I would probably take the tank off and drain it again and check out the fuel pump and filter. But since it is running perfectly with no missing or blubbering, I am inclined to leave it alone. These days I mostly ride my Moto Guzzi or for Winter it will mostly be the V Strom since the partial fairing and the windscreen and barkbusters provide wind protection. And both of those also run my heated gear. So will address Guinevere again in Spring.

I might need one, but not sure if I need a whole new one or just rebuild it. I just bought a 2014 GT and with only 1200 miles but it sat for years. The fuel pump was gunked to shit, it wont prime. But getting 12v from the female connector. Not sure if I should just spend the money and buy a whole new assembly.

Probably well worth it or you may have all sorts of grief. Best of luck!
