Title: Question on Auto De-Comp.
Post by: chinoy on December 18, 2009, 06:17:17 am
When the bike was picked up I was told that loud ticking sound is your auto de-comp. Dont worry about it.
Then I read that the system is supposed to work between 250-350 RPM.
Then why am I hearing it at Idle which is at around 900 RPM right now.

I know your going to tell me to increase my Idle RPM.
But curious to know if anybody else has faced this issue.
ie. hearing the auto decomp when you idle.

Short answer: no.

I have heard reports that the auto-decompressors have been "sticky" in some bikes, and tend to remain active at a higher rpm than originally intended.
I don't know the fix for it, but I've heard reports that it has happened.

The auto decompressors WILL make a distinct "click-click" when they kick in and out - this is pretty normal - although it STILL catches me off guard and makes me think "What was that?" for a second. They CAN, indeed, under some circumstances, interfere with the idle on the bike. This is not to be confused with normal "new bike" lifter noise or action, tho. IF the decompressor is hanging up and interfering with the idle, you'll hear a distinct double click from low on the right case (cam area) that accompanies a misfire at idle. Lifter racket (intermittent - fades in and out - but does NOT affect idle speed ....) will go away completely at about 1500 miles and the engine will get DEAD quiet mechanically. This is due to the almost ridiculously tight tolerance in the lifters low pressure chamber clearance. They limber up and do just great!

Thanks for the inputs guys.
So the consensus  is ignore it and it will fix it self. Once the motor frees-up some.
Yeah all those noises have me pretty spooked.
This is my first "Classic" Bike.
Nice to be re-assured.

Be live it or not Im 40+
Been working since the age of 16

Bought and sold too many bikes, scooters, mopeds and cars to remember.

But this is my first New Bike. Its hard to explain the difference.
So forgive me for being a little paranoid.

The noises are spooky. It sounds like a can of loose nuts and bolts.

And RE warranty and tech support is ....
Most problems are responded to with a you didn't run it in right.
Oh no you shouldn't have crossed 60 Kmph etc.

An email on the sticking auto de-comp has also gone un-answered.

People used to say things like that about the old iron motors.
In time you don't even hear things anymore unless it changes.
The majority of the UCE's that I have seen had the "UCE Tick" of the decompressor when you first start it up.
OTOH mine never did it, soooooooooo...........Is mine the bad one and all the rest OK?
Not gonna loose any sleep over it.

Once you tear into a UCE motor you'll gain a lot of confidence in it. Well built, butt simple, and I hate to say it but much better than it's parents.
I'm just going to ride the hell out of mine and take advantage of the 2yr warranty if anything happens.

I take it your not in the US by your comments on the warranty? We here in the US have been blessed by the fact we have an Importer/Distributor that takes the bull by the horns and one way or the other the customer almost always ends up happy. I say almost because some folks will never be happy with anything no matter what you do.

Anyway, ride your bike and enjoy it for what it is.

Owning a Bullet is a serious culture shock for most people.
I think the best way not to get disappointed is to ride one before you buy it.

Over here they even come to your house and let you ride the new bike.
I had two rides one at the show room and one at home.
And I loved the bike.
ps: Neither bikes had the ticking decomp noise.
