my motorcycle's engine or gearbox is making a noise like something is loose. a clacking kind. I can't tell if it's coming from the engine or the gearbox. I've never put oil in the gearbox because the manual doesn't mention gearbox oil. Does anyone have any clues?

If you can make a sound or video recording and post it online at a hosting side, (perhaps Gyazo?) that would be helpful.

Also, posting in the section for UCE will probably attract more response than here in technical reference.

Is the frequency of the "clacking" in time with ignition events, or much lower?

Don't forget to look at the primary chain & tensioner.
A trifecta of Pre-Unit Bullets: a Red Deluxe 500, a Green Standard 500, and a Black ES 350.

I had that type of noise. It was the pushrod cam follower bearing that was worn.I had it replaced under warranty on a 2 year old 4k miles classic 500

I am assuming you have checked your valve clearances.

Don't your engine & gearbox share the same oil?

If the engine is a UCE EFI, it sure does.  ;)
