Title: Interceptor engine in Bullet frame........
Post by: dewjantim on December 13, 2007, 04:29:00 am
A guy on the Indian RE website says that the Interceptor was built on the Bullet frame. I was under the impression that the Bullet frame was only manufactured in India after the mid 50's. I thought it was superseded by a stronger frame for trials use in England and was no longer produced there. I have always been under the impression that the Interceptor had a stronger frame to support its heavier and more powerful engine. Would someone shed some light on this and tell me if I'm wrong. Thanks. Dew.

The other night when I was searching the Net, I found a photo of an Interceptor engine in a Bullet frame.  I tried to find it again after I saw your post but was unable.  However it was very trick!  Seems that would make for quite a rocket.

The India manufactured Bullet has always used the 1955 & earlier style frame. The RE twins, both 500cc Twin  & 700cc Meteor manufactured by the Redditch UK plant, used essentially the same frame as the Bullet through 1955. The frame design was changed by RE in 1956 for twins and big singles. This frame was used with minor modifications until Vellocette started making them for the series1A Interceptors and the series II. Even the Vellocette made frame was nearly identical to the older ones. The 1956 & later frame has a single large tool/battery/airfilter box with access covers on both the right and left side of the machine. You can access pictures of the Interceptors made from the early 1960s through 1970 on the Burton's Bike Bits web-site and several other Interceptor related sites or you can see the 1955 through 1960 American Indian models on the RE-Indian web-site.

In the early 90's we had a dealer in GA named Bill Fisher who did this conversoin. He may have collaborate with Beno Rodi on it. It was really a nice bike and was a fairly easy conversion. Somewhere I have pictures.....if only I could find them.

It would be interesting to see pictures, but I hear you on finding 'em - I have thousands of pictures digitized now - can't find anything I am looking for, because of senior moments - I spend hours looking for one, then totally forget what I am looking for.   Most frustrating.

There is a photo of a converted bike like the one you're talking about somewhere on this forum. I saw it the other day, but forgot where it was.
