Multigrade 50W and change about every 1,500 miles, new oil/filter is the normal span. Castrol makes a nice 5W/50, Walmart carries Mobil-1 15W/50 for about $25. Filters are cheap on ebay. "Change early & change often..." Practically any modern oil is way better than anything available in the 1950's when these engines were designed.

I use either Halford classic 20w/50 or Opie classic 20w/50 in my Super Meteor.
I change oil filter every 1000 miles and every spring regardless.
