I feel like changing the oil in the '08 for no other reason than it's been in there quite awhile. And maybe it's just for something to do  :)

This has been the 5th summer I've not been able to ride the '08. All I do is keep the tender on & start it once in while. I certainly wasn't going to pull the battery & just let it sit there.

I DO pull the battery over the Winter & don't run it. And the tank has been full of canned real gasoline that whole time. I started using that the last few years I rode it. It starts instantly.

I'm going to run it in 3rd at a moderate RPM on the center stand with a fan on the engine. Waddauthink? 15 minutes? Long enough to stir it up a bit?

Maybe 20.

Oh & BTW, priced for a quick sale. Very low miles. One owner  :)

Should be wunnerful! If I was closer I'd "volunteer" to ride it around the block a few times for you. What a sweet ride you've built.

Must admit that sounds a bit belt and braces for an oil change, you just need to warm it up a bit and circulate the oil, still pretty viscous when cold,  why do you need to put in gear?

And yes a really nice bike, wish we had the 'Classic' AVL in the UK.

Buy a Sixty-5. Replace the engine and primary with one off an Electra-X, with a few electrical modifications to suit, et voilà!

I have seen the Bullet tin ware retro-fitted to an Electra-X on a French forum, but simply junking the weird toolboxes on the Electra-X is a huge improvement. There was also the A500 Machismo model in India, similar to the AVL Classic but with the disk brake front end, some of those have escaped.

No reason at all really except this bike hasn't moved out of my garage & I haven't been able to ride it for 5 years. I'd rather sit on it for 10 minutes (even 15) with everything moving around (engine, tranny, chain, rear wheel) under a little load at 1500rpm in 2nd or 3rd gear than just let it idle & black up the plug. This isn't something I obsess over with suspenders on, it just gives me something to DO.

I’d say it’s best to get it fully warmed up and once it is don’t be afraid to give it a few revs. That will help blow out any condensation. I think putting it on the centre stand and running it up and down through the gears a few times is a good idea.

I’ve learned not to leave a trickle charger on for any length of time. One time I did and I had the battery of my Honda CB750 dry out and ruined. Another time, after I disconnected the trickle charger from the mains lead I turned around to see the charger and its wiring going up in smoke. I was lucky enough to knock it clear of the bike using a big screwdriver I had close by without doing damage or getting myself burned. These days I tend to remove the battery altogether to charge it.

Use a NOCO tender, not a trickle charger. No problem  :)

PS: I haven't even done the oil change yet. Got involved in tidying up & simplifying the left side case wiring where the Main Relay, starter switch Bosch Relay, the ECU spare fuse case & a couple other things hide.

I’ve no idea what a NOCO is, but I do now have a very good smart charger. However, I still prefer to charge batteries then disconnect it. Preferably do it on the bench if the bike is off the road for more than a few weeks.

NOCO is just a brand of tender. Bought my first one about 15 years ago. Hard wired to the battery, just plug it in. Bought a second one 3 years ago. They're 1/2 again as much now, of course.

Of course I take batteries out in the winter (unheated garage) & put them in my water heater room.

Very neat, suitable for 12V in conventional, AGM and lithium format as well as 6V. Available in the UK, too.

I bought one of these about three or four years ago.

Very good bit of kit. It can diagnose, recover and charge just about anything, including our very large van battery. Unfortunately it’s now about 50% more expensive than I paid for mine.

It's amazing how well that company has done. But what's more amazing is the increase in price.

When I bought my 1st one (for the NField) back in 2011 or '12, it was the middle one of the three available & I think it was $29.95. Included were the alligator clip connectors AND the eyelet connectors & universal connector for hard-wiring it to the battery.

It looks like now you have to buy that stuff as extras.

    Oh, well. Different world.
