I think a lot of us just dump the electric start when the old sprag fails. Ha!

If you can track the details down, the Spanish RE importer managed to retro-fit the EFI sprag clutch to an Electra-X successfully a few years ago, I think it was originally posted on Facebook somewhere.

Having had a go at kickstarting an AVL engined 500, I found the quirky valve lifter made it physically more difficult than my 350, with its proper decompression valve. I managed it at the second attempt but owner of the bike said he always used the electric starter and had never tried kickstarting it. I can understand why people want to keep the starter working!

Like Adrian dump the whole lot and kick it, easy enough once you have figured it out.

I have removed the starter and the valve lifter and just kick it following Paul Henshaw's advice, 90% of the time starts on first kick without issue.

You don't say what bike you have.

I don't recognize that part. Here is the sprag I installed in my '08 AVL:

https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/21570

It's a beautiful piece of gear. It was a pleasure just feeling it work in my hands. It's has a really excellent feeling of real engineering compared to the thing that was in there. There is ZERO slack between CW & CCW & a real feeling of solidness.

Can that be fitted to the AVL engine?

Thanks for the replies . My bike is a Bullet Electra X , I no longer have the energy to kick start bikes . I am waiting delivery from the UK and will report once I have it fitted . I bought  it off Ebay for 23.80 GBP  . It is a direct replacement for the original one but stronger . It also fits Yamaha WR 250 F .

Is that Part #10 on this exploded view from Hitchcock's website?

In back road knocking-about-stop-&-smell-the-roses riding, the e-start is a wonderful thing. Saves a lot of flailing about, just pull the clutch lever  hit the button, you are back on your ramble.
A trifecta of Pre-Unit Bullets: a Red Deluxe 500, a Green Standard 500, and a Black ES 350.

My question above is incorrect. Part# 10 is not the complete sprag clutch. The complete sprag clutch is Part# 15 560042. 560042 is composed of #s 9,10,11,12 & 13.

I'm not sure what he got for 23 GBP on ebay, but it sure wasn't a complete sprag clutch. I've questioned that from his very first post.

I'd love to hear from him with an update on how he's making out, but it seems we're not going to.
