Title: Lovely ride on the Overland Journal G5
Post by: JMHAZ on March 06, 2010, 11:26:01 pm
My wife and I took a very nice two-day ride, she on her Honda NX250 and me on the Overland Journal long-term G5. It was a mixture of two-lane pavement and a couple of 20-mile-plus dirt routes, all of which the RE handled perfectly. Interestingly, the two bikes got exactly the same gas mileage - 71 mpg for 350 miles of mixed riding. Here's a self-portrait I did at 65 mph:

The log of the trip is on the magazine's blog, here:

Incidentally, I mentioned this in the news section here as well: Guarav Jani, of Solo to the Top of the World fame, will be a featured guest at the Overland Expo in Arizona in April. He'll be using the long-term Bullet while he's here. It would be great to see some other REs show up too.

Hello Jonathan:

Nice trip and pictures on your blog.  Looks like it was great trip.

By the way what is 'long term G5' ? How many miles are on that bike ?

Uh, yeah: Our starting point was actually our house, which is about 35 miles southwest of Tucson down a long dirt road. Guess I should have mentioned that.

The G5 is on loan for a year to the magazine I co-founded and edit, Overland Journal. The review got off to a slow start due to the transmission recall, and then a redo of the transmission recall when it was discovered that the first mechanic neglected to install a thrust bearing, leaving a transmission that sounded like bolts in a coffee can at idle.

Now it's running perfectly, and I'm starting to put some miles on it. The idea is to treat it more or less like REs get treated in India - as a do-anything, go-anywhere motorcycle. I'm getting ready for a trip into Mexico, then another circumnavigating the Grand Canyon on back roads. Thinking about Central America as well . . .

Can I go with you? Not that my wife would let me, but it sure sounds like you're having more fun than I am.

Br. Jonathan, here's where my almost total command of the two most important phrases in the Spanish Language comes into play..."Dos cervicas por favor" "Dos burrito pollo por favor"
That and my penchant for finding every nail , screw and rusty bit of barbed wire with my front tire should qualify me to ride point for you on your epic journey.

( did I fail to mention that I am also a fine judge of cheap scotch and even cheaper cigars  ;D )
