Well I just picked up a "bobber project" which is a 2001 model according to the title. It has right shift 4-speed. Already started piecing her back together and looking forward to acquiring some new skills in the process, as I'm surely not a mechanic of any kind. Wish me luck and I'm sure I'll be asking dozens of questions this winter, starting with: do you really operate the throttle and clutch with the same hand??? Or do I have it backwards?

You operate the throttle with the right hand twist, the front brake with the right hand lever, the clutch with the left hand lever, the shift with the right foot lever(in your case), and the rear brake with the left foot lever(in your case).
In cases with left side shift, the foot controls are reversed.

Thank you, ace.cafe. That makes a heck of a lot more sense. I swear I'm not that dumb but the guy I got it from had them mislabeled.

you would do well to post pictures when you have questions, it may be the decompression lever and cable that you(or the PO) are confusing with the throttle?
