Title: New pictures posted & update
Post by: TRider on November 19, 2007, 10:34:17 pm
I got my Electra back Sat. morning, rode it from the dealership to home 48 miles without stopping until I got in my driveway.  Then the nightmare started.  It wouldn't cut off.  Turned the key to the off position, it would act like it was shutting down, then it would act like it was trying to recrank itself.  Wierd.  Anyways, hitting the kill switch had no effect, it just wouldn't cut completely off.
I should have just switched the gas lever to off and let it cut off by running out of gas.  But that was much to smart a decision for me, I have to do things the hardway.

I won't try and go into detail of the "cutoff" method I used, its just too stupid to admit.
But the bike did end up laying on top of me and still running.  No damage except for just a few scrapes on the engine guard (they did their job).  I managed to right the bike while holding the clutch and brake real firm, and then it just cut off.  Lost quiet a bit of fluid.

Anyways, the dealer from Ellaville is driving the 48 miles tonight to my home to try and fix the bike, or trailer it back to his shop.  Hopefully he can fix it.  He thinks it is just a defective switch, which happened on another bike he sold.  Whew!

I really like the new Classic look.  The tank is not what I thought it would be, I am disappointed somewhat.  There should have been some green painted on the sides of the tank, not all chrome.  But I am too upset to complain, I'll just take it like is and deal with it later.  I might end up painting it all Florida orange, who knows.
I think the pictures really don't do the new look justice.  In person the chrome fender and green rear fender does not really present a problem to me (for right now).  When one's available, I am sure I will want to change out the green rear fender to chrome.
Or, I might end up painting the chrome front fender green. @$@@%^^##&#$#^.

Bike looks great. Sounds like they boogered up the wiring when they did it. Too bad. Thankfully, the system is so simplistic, it shouldn't be hard to find and fix.

Sorry to hear about your travails! Now the seat onwards part of your bike looks exactly like my new bike that I bought in India last month, pix posted. And here I am thinking that the overseas Electra look is the look I think I would like to have, with no chrome on any part of my bike except the engine parts!
Probably a lesson somewhere in this for many of us?!

The bike looks great to me!

What kind of windshield is on it?

This doesn't sound like your problem, but for anyone that has a bike that keeps running I've encountered it twice:
1) My Ural's starter button switch became corroded inside the housing to the point that it was randomly making contact causing the starter to engage
2) When debugging an ignition issue on my Ural that had to do with my points, coil or condensor I hardwired the ignition directly to the battery + (mainly to bypass the switchgear as a possible cause of the problem). Guess what - that'll keep the bike running forever!

Really looks to be a together bike.  About the rear fender, maybe I'm wrong, but it always seemed to me that pitted chrome sneaks up on me - there one day but not before.  Therefore, if this is true, I would tend to favor the painted rear fender because it is a little more difficult to get at than the other chrome items.  Anyone have any thoughts on this, or on keeping chrome from pitting in general?

Quite an incident with the shutoff - it would have been horrible to dent that nice tank, better a few bruises by far!

Have fun with it,

Larry

I'm not sure this applies, but check out the last paragraph and see if this is related...

Thanks for that, Thumper!

The dealer loaded the bike up on his trailer last night about 08:45pm.  It was pretty decent of Wayne and his son Wayne to drive the 48 miles after closing their shop and try to get the bike back to running.  They got it cranked, but determined it had a burnt battery, they blew the low beam headlight, and it needs a solenoid switch.  I'm to pick it up Friday morning.  Good fellows these Waynes.  Very very hard to get mad at them they are so nice.
