  • 2012 B5 on the original Portland Dorset UK

Been out and about on the B5 the last few days, after my chain failure , the slightest metallic noise from the rear immediately grabs my attention.
It looks like the bottom shock bush has swollen and forced the chain guard forked mount out from behind the shock, causing it to bounce on the rear chain and sprocket. After a couple of roadside try to fix its, only to have come loose on the next pothole, I gave up and just tied it out of the way with an elastic cord.
Another poor design, I am going to make a new bracket either weld or rivet it to the chain guard, that will fit on the outside of the shock so can be secured properly with the shocks nut and a washer or two.
Otherwise its been brilliant finally riding in the sunshine once again ;)

Got my C5 completely back together after three weeks of dis-assembly to replace a needle bearing in the transmission. Also took the opportunity to add a kick start, decarbonize  the engine, paint a few odds and ends, change the tail light, and fabricate a new head stay. And after all that... she started on the first kick.

Well done!  The first documented kickstart add on.  Prepare for the deluge of questions coming your way. Glad you've got your ride back together.

ScooterBob also added one to an early C5 military many years ago.

Great job and here is the first question  :)

Would you be able to post a complete list of parts, gaskets and the source for parts?  An approximate price would be exceedingly helpful.  I am planning on doing this as well and a reliable parts and supplier list would be highly appreciated by many good folks in this forum. Thanks for considering!

861034 Cover, Kick Start Shaft                                                                     Out Of Stock
500622 Kick Start Crank Assembly                                                                          36.30
                                                                                                                 Total=138.59
Prices are in GBP. Shipping was a whopping 41GBP, plus the other items I ordered, my total was $310.00. You'll need to find a machine shop to finish boring the case and the shaft cover plate (the plate behind the drive gear).  Part 142257 Stop Plate, Foot Starter Pawl and  146714 Hex Screw were installed on the case at the factory, so you may want to hold off on ordering the parts until you open the case, in case you need to add them to your order. The holes for the oil thrower screws and the spring screw were drilled and tapped, so everything was simple assembly.

What crap weather we're having in Denver.  I really wanted to get out for a short ride to check the bike with the core/baffle installed in the Dunstall.  I could go now, but the roads are still a bit wet and it's only 40*F, and it's supposed to rain all afternoon.  I just might go out anyway, I can always wipe the bike down when I get back.  I really want to get some more seat time in before I pull the seat and primary cover off to get it ready for the custom hydrographics.  :)

Lubed all my cables and moving handlebar bits; also pulled the air filter out to give it a good shake... found this rock in it.  Nothing like having the air intake right next to the back wheel!

Wow! Thats a big rock! I filled up with new premium no ethanol, and went for a 40 mile ride, with two friends.  B5 ran perfectly, and had a nice ride on a good two-lane road.Speeds were 50-60mph,and temps in the 60s.     Lynn

Tighten and tinker day.  Checked all nuts and bolts, spokes, aired tires to correct pressure, for me. Readjusted the seat.  Added some stabil and Marvel Mystery oil to the gas. Ten mile or so test ride.  All is well.

Thank you so much......this is indeed the first one with parts list as well :)

Even though SB never posted a list, I did see the C5 he had added the kickstart to with my own eyes.....and this was before RE started putting one in a C5......time to call Hitchcocks! Thanks.

Changed the oil (out with the 5W 15, in with the 20 W 50). Checked the chain play. Cleaned and lubed the chain. And put on this soft sided trunk that I ordered months ago:

As I recall, you switched to the 5W15 oil because you were having problems starting your motorcycle in those freezing NY temperatures.
I don't recall you saying if it improved things or not so I'll ask, did it help the starting problem?

Hi, that soft sided trunk looks great - where did you get it?  I already have a soft-sided carrier, but it is uglier than sin, whereas your one looks pretty good.

Cheers,
