Hi all,

I have a 2012 Enfield Classic 500 EFI. I ordered a new sprocket and chain set online and just realised it is for a Classic 350. Unfortunately, it has already been shipped from India to Australia.

Can anyone tell me whether this sprocket and chain is compatible on my C5? What will the difference be?

Thanks

The rear sprocket should be interchangeable.

The front sprocket is a smaller tooth size, which means the chain will be shorter too.

500cc Front Sprocket 18T
350cc Front Sprocket 16T
500cc Chain Length 102 links
350cc Chain Length 100 links

just to add if anyone else is reading this,  the original chain for a 19" wheeled B5 is 101 links although with a one tooth larger front sprocket 102 links is better.

Goes without saying that that 16T front sprocket will also make you rev harder. The bike will feel more "powerful" but you will hurt fuel economy, and rev higher at the same given speed. Not to mention introducing more/different vibrations. I guess you should order the correct set and see if someone in Australia who has a 350 will want to buy them off you.

For my rear sprocket, do I need a specific sprocket if I have a rear drum or are the drum sprocket and the chain sprocket interchangeable?

The rear brake drum and chain sprocket are cast as one piece.  I believe this one is correct for the 2012, Classic 500 UCE:   https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-shop/Rear-wheel-sprockets/10908
These do wear out.  The teeth take on a noticeable "hooked" appearance when badly worn.  Going to the larger size sprocket is possible, but will cost you some $$.  You need an aftermarket hub, plus an aftermarket bolt on sprocket:

I don't think that a smaller rear sprocket than 38t is commercially available?

I own a 2012 C 500, Desert Storm  that was made in January 2012.  My machine has an 18" rear wheel and came from the factory with a configuration that I don't think anyone has mentioned; 17 tooth front sprocket, 102 links, 38 teeth rear sprocket/drum.  This is what my records say, but I might be wrong about the number of links.  I like the this ratio just fine and it also seems to work fine with a 19" wheel.  I wouldn't mind riding with a 16 tooth front sprocket, especially with the 19" rear wheel, but I don't ride my RE on the highway for any great distance.

Here's a link to that configuration, which includes another view of the rear sprocket:  https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-shop/chain-and-sprocket-kit-std/34410

One can add a link with one of these "link and half", if you need to.

For the least expensive way to use what you bought and keep the stock ratio, buy the link & a half, plus a replacement front sprocket and sell your 16t to somebody who wants to try it:

17t    https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-shop/Gearbox-Sprockets-EFI-English-Made/20896
the 17t would probably be fine with 101 links.

18t    https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-shop/Gearbox-Sprockets-EFI-English-Made/20895
19t    https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/accessory-shop/Gearbox-Sprockets-EFI-English-Made/20893
19 teeth is about as big as you can go without machining away some of the inside of the side cover.
