I think the stroker crank and the 6.5/1 forged piston get you a 570 motor with maybe 7.5/1 compression. Should be a hoot.

I dunno about actual temp numbers, but the same tuning in August makes for a lot warmer that engine than it did in February.

What was the resolution for this issue? "Bite the Bullet" for HP/reliability mods & break out the Big Boy checque book? Sell it off as a parts bike? Get the bits & rebuild piecemeal? Waiting on parts from India? Did it just get parked a the backyard & left to rot under a tarp? We've all been there. Curious as to the outcome. Pictures of an in-progress engine repair are always welcome. In the wayback folks did work this in tiny unheated British sheds, as needs be. That's the hard way, but it worked.

Looks like an iron cylinder painted silver. Stick a magnet to it to know for sure.

Alumin(i)um cylinder barrels are a thing.

https://www.pricepartmotorcycles.co.uk/ourshop/prod_1085944-805006-alloy.html.

https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/18458?ref_page=Bullet%20Export%20500cc

These are nowadays after-market items for the otherwise iron-barrel Bullets, I heard they're produced in India by AC Delco. The Redditch factory also fitted alloy cylinder barrels to competition bikes, e.g the Fury.

Alumin(i)um cylinder barrels are a thing.

So is aluminum colored spray paint.  https://www.target.com/p/rust-oluem-12oz-2x-painter-39-s-touch-ultra-cover-spray-paint-aluminum/-/A-75575325

Notice that the primary side cover, the transmission cover, and various other aluminum parts, including the timing cover where the black paint is missing, are quite a different shade of "aluminum".  To me, that cylinder looks too silver to be aluminum alloy, and too blotchy to be polished and clear coated alloy.  The tell: a close look at picture number 5 reveals what looks to be silver overspray on a nylock nut, the other half of which is oversprayed with black paint.

It's just a parts motor. An iron cylinder isn't a deal breaker. IF it has a functional crank & gearbox you are way ahead just in unfragged cases and peripheral bits.

To put it on the road at the very least the top end gets torn off to give you a chance to guess if the crank is OK. The timing cover has to come off to see if the oil pumps are scored, the cams are indexed properly, the cams & tappets aren't thrashed, and if the quill seal and quill bolt are OK.

That LH shift transmission is really just parts until you put another $150 or so in the RH shift covers, bellcrank operator, etc. Then there is the primary side to look at.

Possibly all is well, but in any event if you don't do your due diligence, more fool you. I've never yet pulled a Bullet cover where I didn't find something that could use attention.

So $1200 gets you spares at least. That's rather the point we have been trying to get across to the original poster, that there's no free lunch here. The era of $500 running take out Bullet engines is long gone, if it ever was.

Just be glad you aren't trying to resurrect an Ariel Red Hunter, or maybe a Matchless or Velocette with fragged engine cases & blown crank.

OK, silver painted iron is a possibility, and I'm wrong, but the reason I suspect that it's an after-market alloy barrel rather than OEM cast iron painted silver is the finish on the fins, the OEM cast iron are usually well finished, but the fin edges aren't so smooth on this one with what looks like traces of casting flash. The alloy barrel I bought for Not A Fury needed a bit of cosmetic trimming work to bring the fin edges up to an acceptable standard.

I'll give the OP 30 days to buy it or I'm going to get it for my Dad. (July 28th)
I want to do up a lump for him that has no chance of seizing.

I might need a bit of help from the forum folks here to rebuild it. ;D
