It is a bit shocking to walk down the rows of bikes at Sturgis and look at the odometers. Very few miles on many of them. In the US the percentage of high mileage riders is fairly low. For most of us it is a leisure activity and not a basic form of transportation.
A used RE can be a very good value. If you want to be really involved with the care and feeding of your bike an old Iron barrel might be good. They usually have the lowest price. With an iron barrel how it was broken in, ridden and cared for before you buy it is critical. Much less so for the AVL or Lean Burn. If you find a UCE model, it is pretty hard to hurt one. Very careful break-in is not nearly as important as the iron barrel, they are more forgiving of poor maintenance etc.
