I have now adjusted my primary chain twice in 6300 miles.
The first time I adjust it for 5 mm by just lifting the chain until resistance was felt.
The second time I adjusted it at 5 mm by lifting the chain as far as it would go with a fair amount of force.
I wonder how it should be done, or does it even matter. I have noticed no difference, but would not like the find out the hard way that mine is adjusted too tight.

You get it too tight and you should notice right away.  It will sound different and you will be down on power.  Not going to hurt if it is a little too loose, this chain should seldom needs adjusting.

Agreed, and make sure you check it a few spots,there will be a difference somewhere.
2005E Fixed and or Replaced: ignition, fenders,chainguard,wires,carb,headlight,seat,tailight,sprockets,chain,shock springs,fork springs, exhaust system, horn,shifter,clutch arm, trafficators,crankcase vent.

I check in about 5 - 6 positions using the bottom chain tension adjuster.  At the tightest spot, if I can just still feel the adjuster bottom bolt head raise a miniscule amount off the case casting (raising it up by finger) that's where it's set.

Thanks guys. It's probably OK but It's only oil, so I'm gonna check it again just to make sure.
