Title: Songs from 'happy, happy Tonga'
Post by: LJRead on September 28, 2009, 09:39:30 pm
Permit me to introduce our Angela Afeaki.  I had an email from her this morning with plans to meet with her in December regarding promotion of our place when we reopen next year.  She is becoming Tonga's overseas representative for the tourist industry here.

The song Katinia was written and originally sung by Tonga's most famous songbird Tuimala Kaho (called the "Tongan canary"), quite elderly now and her songs often copied but her singing never equaled.  She is the mother of Mata, married to the King's younger brother,Ma'atu who was disowned because of her being a commoner, and now both Mata and Ma'atu are deceased. I recall their marriage being written up in Time magazine because it was a true love affair, and disobedience to Ma'atu's father, the then king.  Mata died young (some say her life taken by royal ghosts). Tuimala carries on and has written a song about her lovely daughter.
