Motorcycle chariot racing. It has been going on for a long time. Several countries claim to have started it.

Yeah , it is unlikely the Lambretta scooters, popular amongst legionnaires in the day, were used for racing.

Fun and quite a spectacle.

Found some video, here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1avID4bJ3pw

and some interesting historical pictures and discussion, here:  http://www.ridingvintage.com/2013/06/motorcycle-chariot-racing.html

and here:  https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/motorcycle-chariot-races-photos/

At the last site, 3rd picture, we can see in one variation, the robes tied to the moto rider's arm that the charioteer used to supposedly guide the vehicle.  I can imagine this arrangement leading to some arguments.

Dang!

I notice the track gets rougher as the day goes on, best to be first in the line up and not last.  ;)

For true thrills and spills at a totally awesome speed, here is a rare historical film about scooter racing on the Isle of Mann from way back in 1958.

The commentary is riveting - a must see ...

...and not a single pitstop needed for valve lash adjustment!  ;D  Fun is where you find it. The milk cans for fuel was a nice touch.

One makes do as one must :D

I love the commentary, especially stuff like the discussion about "facing the rigours of an English Summer"  and pointing out famous landmarks across the mountain that the riders cannot actually see as it is too foggy anyway.
