In Europe, where the CL500 has made its first appearance, the bike is aimed at riders who are legally limited to no more than 47 hp thanks to the tiered-motorcycle license system operated throughout the European Union. Since the Rebel 500 it’s based on is already offered in The States, and the original CL street scramblers of the 1960s and ‘70s specifically targeted the U.S. market, it makes sense that the new CL500 will come here eventually.The CL500 is powered by the familiar 471cc twin used across the CB500 range and in the Rebel 500, a mainstay of Honda’s middleweight lineup for so long that it’s had the dubious honor of being widely copied by Chinese companies stepping up from Honda-clone singles to Honda-clone twins. There’s no doubting its value as a low-cost, reliable workhorse of an engine. With 46 horsepower on tap, the CL500 perfectly slots into its intended license class and musters a respectable 32 lb.-ft. of torque in the process. With an essentially “square” layout, with the bore and stroke almost equal, it’s a design that prioritizes midrange over peak power. In the CL500, it drives through the Rebel’s six-speed transmission via an assist-and-slipper clutch, but gets revised mapping and a larger 41-tooth rear sprocket to enhance acceleration. While it lacks the 270-degree crank angle that’s popular in more modern twins, the engine’s flat balancer-assisted 180-degree crank is a smooth runner.

There’s no price yet, even in Europe, but given that the Rebel 500 that it’s based on costs $6,699 with ABS, the CL500 isn’t likely to be far off of that.

Honda’s 500cc lineup has garnered a lot of fans around the world, and for 2023, the Japanese giant is adding another motorcycle to it - the CL500 scrambler. For those of you who don’t know, the CL badge was borne by Honda’s first-ever scrambler in the 1960s, and 2022 marks 60 years of it. So in a way, the CL500 not only allows the company to attack the hotter-than-ever scrambler market, it also pays homage to the iconic CL.

Like the design, the chassis and engine are drawn from the Rebel 500. The 471cc, twin-cylinder mill belts out 46 horsepower and 32 pound-feet, but instead of being an exact swap, Honda claims the CL has shorter gear ratios and a different ECU map. Similarly, the steel trellis chassis has a new subframe partnered with 41mm telescopic forks (150mm travel) and adjustable rear shocks (145mm travel). The wheels measure 19/17-inch and come shod with dual-purpose rubber to take on anything you throw at the CL500.

As for dimensions, the CL500 tips the scale at 192kg (423 pounds) while offering a seat height and ground clearance of 790mm (31.1-inch) and 155mm (6.1-inch), respectively.

Honda’s entire 500cc lineup - the CB500X, CB500F, CBR500R, and Rebel 500 - are all present in America, and we expect the new CL500 scrambler to join its siblings. It should reach dealerships by early 2023 at a price tag of around $7,000. With no direct rivals in the market, the CL500 has a clear path to become a high-selling motorcycle, but only time will tell whether it happens.

While it will have Honda reliability and build quality there is nothing aesthetically pleasing to my eye on that bike but should make for good solid transportation for potential buyers.

You say that now, but the next time you attempt a 30" deep water crossing you'll wish you were on your trusty CL300!!

Exactly right. I think Honda styling nowadays leaves a lot to be desired. And that massive silencer - I thought the stock silencer on the Honda CBF1000FA I had was on the large side ! ( although a good bike )

Honda launched the CB350 back in Sep 2020. In the initial months, it had registered good response from bike enthusiasts. Later in Feb 2021, Honda launched a scrambler version based on the CB350, called CB350 RS. Despite two motorcycles on offer in the 350cc range, Honda has not come anywhere close to sales numbers registered by Royal Enfield. In Jan 2023, Royal Enfield registered sales of over 26k units for their Classic 350. While sales of Honda CB350 range was 1,086 units. To bring a boost to their sales in the 350cc range, Honda is getting ready to launch a new motorcycle next month.
Honda CB350 Cafe Racer To provide more options to customers in the 350cc segment, Honda will soon launch a new cafe racer motorcycle based on CB350. Honda has chosen to challenge Royal Enfield and this new motorcycle is expected to improve its prospects in this space. Likely to be called Honda CB350 Cafe Racer, the motorcycle has been showcased to dealers. Launch is expected next month. It will come with Cafe Racer style single seat, revised headlamp cowl, black alloys, black engine with chrome Honda logo, etc.Speaking of the new Honda CB350 Cafe Racer, the motorcycle sports a neo-retro look. Some key features include round headlamp, sculpted fuel tank, single piece seat, chrome finish exhaust, alloy wheels, an all-LED setup and semi-digital instrument cluster. It also has a smartphone charging USB port.
CB350 Cafe Racer powertrain Honda’s 350 cc Cafe Racer will use the same engine as that of CB350. It is rated to deliver 21.07 ps @ 5500 rpm and 30 Nm @ 3000 rpm. It is mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The motorcycle will also be sharing a number of other components with CB350. This will help Honda to reduce costs and improve production efficiency. Just like CB350, its cafe racer version could be equipped with assist and slipper clutch, dual channel ABS, Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), and Honda Smartphone Voice Control system (HSVCS).The instrument console could also be the same, which displays a range of information such as average mileage, real time mileage, gear position indicator, distance to empty, and battery voltage. Expect prices to be in the Rs 2.2 lakh to Rs 2.3 lakh range, ex-sh. More details to be revealed at the launch event next month.
