I'm about to re-route the tail/brake/indicator harness due to the same reason. Though my plan is to make it tidy and drill a couple of holes in the steel tube that arcs around the rear fender. One hole for the wiring to go into, the other hole for it to exit and plug into the lights assembly. I'll probably be adding small rubber grommets to the holes so that the vibes don't make the bare metal chew through the wiring. I'll add a dash of black spray paint and a clear coat to seal off the drilled out holes too.

That's the next, and final project to make this 2010 C500 back to 100% OEM.

Electricians spiral wrap sleeving is great for protecting wiring harnesses.

In my case, my 240 pounds probably caused the fender to come closer to the tire than it normally would. On the B5 with a full length one piece seat, you can only see about an inch of the harness between the rear lights and where it goes under the seat. Not really even noticeable, and I like it out in the open where I can get to it.

I was happy to gently fiddle with things but if it meant taking the wiring apart then I was going to quietly give in and take it to the shop. It turned out to be a small flap of rubber on the front brake that was sticking (somehow). Looking at the wiring diagram I couldn't see how that could be but what do I know. Anyway, the brake light is working fine for both brakes now. Thank you all for your suggestions.

Glad you got it fixed. 12V light wiring on the Enfield is extremely simple. It's only when you get into the EFI crap where it becomes a nightmare.
