Have 68 interceptor Twin that leaks engine fluid freely with or without the bike running seems to be coming from around main shaft. Motor was rebuilt and assume seal was hosed up in process. Can this be repaired without tearing the engine down? By shade tree mechanic?

Without the bike running there shouldn't be any way of losing any fluids in this area. Otherwise it could be from the primary housing and when running a very possible culprit would be the crankcase breather. almost anything can be done without tearing the engine apart, as long as you don't have to go near the crankshaft bearings.

As l recall had a couple of bikes going back decades where the shaft seals gave up the ghost, but as l recall did not have to strip engine to replace them, mind you l might question the rebuild of the engine.

Thankyou for the info, hopefully wont require rebuild, seems to run fine but hasnt been run enough to tell if it will go to self destruct mode when it is.

Hi, assuming that the primary drive seal is the culprit, you can get to it without tearing the motor apart. The seal is actually located in the back side of the inner primary cover. SEE attached parts drawing.
You will however need to pull the alternator , the drive sprocket and clutch assembly before the inner primary can be removed.
A bit of work, but not so much as splitting engine cases.
