Title: 6' tall on a C5? Better seating options?
Post by: Ducati Scotty on July 12, 2010, 09:52:00 pm
So I'm looking at getting the C5 but at 6' tall it feels just a tad small.  The G5 is nice since it has a longer seat and you can move around a little more.  I'm looking at these two seats as options:

http://store.royalenfieldusa.com/aftermarket-parts-accessories/seats/sedona-red-leather-solo-seat

Any taller riders have experienc with them?  Do they offer some more room?  Any other good solo seat options?  Maybe the English dual seat is better?

Thanks,
Scott

I'm curious as well being that I stand at around 6'1 with boots on. The G5 fit me well when I last rode, but if there's any way to gain an inch in height I'm all for it!  :)

I'm about 5'11"/ 190 lbs, I don't have any issues with the stock seat as far as me fitting it goes.  However it does sorta' leave me feeling like I will slip off the seat when I wind it up in the lower gears.  There is not a lot of 'Butt Curve' to hold you, eventualy I will order an old school seat.  There is one on Ebay I like, item number 130408031946.

I can't say that I've heard of anyone too TALL for the Enfield ...... I usually get twenty phone calls a week from people complaining that they can't be flat-footed with their knees bent when astride the bike .......  ???

Qgolden, thanks.  That is a nice looking seat.  I was thinking about something like that while looking at some old BMWs.  I think of it as a BMW seat and not an American seat but I guess that's just an opinion.

Scooter Bob, at 6' I don't find many bikes I can't flat foot but good to know no one is feeling cramped.  Maybe I'm worried over nothing.

I'm 5'-10" - you ought to see me on a GS BMW ..... Unless I sneak a cheek off the seat - there are NO feet on the ground .... I dangle about an inch on either side! Hahaha!

You guys need to get to an auto upholstery shop.   Those first 2 seats are actually lower than stock.   ALL the seats are scooped and crush down even more after you've been sitting on them for 25 miles.

I just took my Clubman seat to Diannasshop and it has seen a transformation.  Got riid of the scoop, flattened everything out a lot, and I'm in heaven.  I have similar treatments done on most of my seats- and one BMW had it raised a bit, too.   Having it done doesn't cost that much, either.

Thanks for letting me know that they were lower than stock, that's not what I'm after.

I've actually done seat mods myself on ocassion.  I like firmer foam than anybody but Corbin uses and I think they're out of business.  Then just get the shop to do the  upholstery or stretch the original cover if you can.

There are also plenty of generic single seats available through chopper/custom shops and catalogs.

Yah, I love Corbin Seats. They are still around www.corbin.com.  I actually kept the Corbin I put on my Road King when I sold the bike.  Problem is Corbin does not make a seat fitted to the Enfield, they do however make a couple of "Universal" seats that could be adapted.

UncleErnie, do you have any photos?

 Here's an option.

Laperra makes them for CMW. Very high quality. Many forum members have them.

I took a quick look on the Corbin site, I'm glad to see they're back.  Or never left,  I could swear I read they were defunct and even checked the site.

Anywho, I only saw one solo seat and it kinda had the look of a very nicely upholstered John Deer tractor seat.  Downright agricultural shape.  And $350.  I paid that much for a whole 2 up seat not so long ago.

Anyway, looking on various chopper sites there are many longer seats available with a nice scoop to them.

Scotty try, cycle shack or v- twin, do a google search, they probably have the largest selection of sprung seats. I'm sure you could adapt them to an Enfield. Your local bike shop is probably a dealer for them anyway. Go to multi fit section.

OK- here are some really bad photos, but I hope they get the idea across.  Dianna says the foam in the stock seat id open cell, and she had never seen stuff like was in there before.  What a surprise.  So anyhoo- she uses closed cell foam with a thin top layer of memory foam.  In my case (as always) she filled in the "scoop" and dug out the back some so the seat would be flat flat flat.   IMO, scooped seats maede out of soft foam feel good fopr a half hour and then you want to kill yourself.  This seat is quite firm, but I can sit clost to the tank of gointo a full tack and it's all good.

She also does a little scoop/indent at the back so you tailbone has room.
These pictures are of the bike on a center stand, so the seat will actually be more horizontal whilel sitting on it.
This is basically the same thing Sargent Seats does without all the cost and rigamaril.

The stock seats have a similar scoop.  If I was going to be using the stock seat, I would do the same thing.  If I was tall, I would do the same while adding another inch to make it taller still.

The old ironing board seats and BMW seats from the 70's were VERY comfortable and they were all wide and flat.

How long is that seat front to back?

I agree, flat is good.  Or at least not terribly sculpted.  I like a little lip at the back just so I know where it is but I don't sit on it.

If you mean me;

There's a picture of it on page 12 of the new cataloque, but no measurements...
The back ends about whee the stock seat does, but over-all it's about 3 inches shorter to accomodate the Clubman tank, which is bigger than the stock gas tank.
I also use rear-sets, so it all works together pretty well.
