I spent the bulk of my working life as an Aerial device/ Truck and heavy equipment mechanic/shop foreman with the Connecticut Light and Power Company. Due to the nature of the utility business, I was on call 24/7, 365 days a year and subject to recall (at company expense) if I was on vacation and they needed me for storm or emergency work. Many weeks I worked 80 or more hours, and in some instances, like Hurricane Sandy would literally live at the shop for weeks at a stretch.
I retired 4 years ago at 66 and have been busy as a one-armed paper hanger just about every day since. Looking at my life now it amazes me I even had time to go to work, let alone enough time to work a hundreds of hours of overtime every year.
FWIW I wouldn't say every day at CL&P was a great one, some were downright horrific, but overall, they were far more good days than bad ones, and while I'm glad to be retired, I do miss the work and comradery that went with it.
