By the time mine had reached 2000mls I had changed oil/filter 3 times, nothing like erring on the side of caution, oil is cheap new engines are not.

Checked with the dealer and he said first change at 300 miles then second at 3000 or 6 months whatever is the sooner, so I will do second change at 2000 miles then every 2500 from there and even that is way sooner than recommended according to this

"Royal Enfield is confident that all these new initiatives will help in increasing the service interval on Bullet, Classic and Thunderbird to 6 months/5000 kilometres from the present 3 months/3000 kilometres. The company has also extended the oil change interval from the existing 6 months/5000 kilometres to 12 months/10,000 kilometres. "

Well that new oil change interval of 10,000 km seems pretty hard to believe, but I have checked and that is what they say, I will stick to 1500-2000 miles :-)

I understand your caution, but apparently that is now 6 times more often than manufacturers recommendations

"To reduce the cost, Royal Enfield authorised service centres will start using a new process and new technology. The authorised service centres will now start the use of a new mix of semi-synthetic oil for servicing. This will increase the oil replace interval, which in turn will increase the service interval too. Currently, the Bullet, Classic and Thunderbird range have a service interval of 3 months or 3,000 km. The new service interval will be 6 months or 5,000 km. It will significantly reduce the ownership cost, which according to Royal Enfield is about 40%.

The oil change interval will now be 12 months or 10,000 km, which is a significant increase from the current 5,000 km or 6 months period. The new strategy will help customers save a lot of money and Royal Enfield has estimated up to 40% savings over a period of 3 years. This new regime is applicable to all the bikes powered by the Unit Construction Engine motorcycles."

My guess is that Royal Enfield has jumped on the Greta save-the-earth bandwagon by reducing the amount of oil and filters used and disposed of by their customers. I kind of doubt that any changes have been made in the construction or materials of the RE 500 dead-duck single engine.  ::)

Correction, you are changing the oil 9 times more frequently than recommended :-)
