i'm not seeing any redeeming virtue in her.

i have familial connections via pre-ww1 ukraine with judaism, (non-believer myself) and have taken a dim view of the state of israel pretty much all my life. re their current situation, there's ample blame to go around, i'm not seeing any clean hands. i respect the right of any people to exist, and that includes the palestinian people. it seems to me that very little was learned from the holocaust.

I have met quite a few Israeli over the years, lovely people.

As for their increasingly extreme right wing government, they cop a lot of criticism even from within Israel itself.

I have met a lot of English people and I can't say I have liked all of them , and I am English !
I don't think you can generalise about people by their nationality .

The unanswered question is what is the Varyag actually defending against? Our local Carrier Group just got busier. The fast attacks below & around the Group now get to play with the Akula or Yasen class Russian subs undoubtedly shadowing the Varyag battle group. What could possibly go wrong?

Russian warships enter the Red Sea, navy says
https://www.jpost.com/breaking-news/article-794129
Several Russian warships have passed the Bab al-Mandab Strait into the Red Sea, the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet said on Thursday, amid attacks by Yemen's Houthis on merchant shipping.
The Zvezda TV channel, owned by the defense ministry, quoted the fleet as saying the Russian cruiser Varyag and the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov were taking part in the voyage.
Houthi terrorists in Yemen have repeatedly attacked ships passing through the Bab al-Mandab Strait in the Red Sea since November in support of Palestinians, the terror organization claims.

Red Sea crisis nears boiling point, unable to heat up spot rates
Overcapacity remains ultimate rate determinant, despite heightened geopolitical risks
Michael Rudolph ; Monday, April 01, 2024

https://www.freightwaves.com/news/red-sea-crisis-nears-boiling-point-unable-to-heat-up-spot-rates

Russian warships entered the Red Sea last Thursday, for what the Russian Pacific Fleet’s press service has stated was the performance of “assigned tasks within the framework of the long-range sea campaign.” This intentional vagueness has invited no small amount of speculation as to the ships’ true objectives.
Theories range from retaliatory pressure on Israel, which decided in late February to co-sponsor a United Nations resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, to supporting beleaguered ally Syria’s military objectives in the region.
Then again, the warships might simply be in the Red Sea to guard against attacks from Yemen-backed Houthi rebels.

Such is an examination of lanes most impacted by the Houthis’ recent attacks, which proved to be little more than a drop in the bucket for rates on a global scale. The global composite of the Freightos Baltic Daily Index, which tracks spot container freight rates across 13 lanes, is actually down 17.2% since the start of March. Similarly, Drewry’s World Container Index — which tracks both spot and short-term contract freight rates — has fallen 16.2% over the past four weeks.
Of course, there is also the domestic matter of the Port of Baltimore, now closed indefinitely after the collapse of the nearby Francis Scott Key Bridge. While this closure is estimated to have a limited impact on the region’s intermodal market, it will rattle the supply chain of automobiles.
Markets were still quick to react, however, as spot rates from China to the U.S. East Coast jumped 6.7% from where they were a week prior to the incident.

Several killed in Israeli strike on Iranian consulate in Damascus ; 01 Apr 2024

Iran has promised to respond after two commanders from its Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) were among seven people killed in an Israeli air strike that flattened the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the elite Quds Force of the IRGC and his deputy General Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi were killed in the attack, the IRGC said in a statement on Monday.

Iran’s Ambassador Hossein Akbari, who was not injured, said at least five people had been killed in the attack, including three military personnel. He said that Tehran’s response would be “decisive”.

In a separate statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said that Iran “reserves the right to carry out a reaction and will decide on the type of response and the punishment of the aggressor”.

Ali Vaez, director of the International Crisis Group’s Iran Project, says Israel’s alleged attack on Iran’s consulate in Syria is “akin to targeting another country on its own soil”.
“Overall this seems to still be a low-simmer regional war. It’s not yet an all-out regional conflict, but it does appear that Israel is trying to do everything in its power to expand the conflict,” Vaez told Al Jazeera.
“[This] puts Israel in a win-win situation because Israel knows Iran doesn’t want to get dragged into a regional war, so if it escalates its attacks against Iranian assets and personnel in Syria, it probably will be cost free, and if Iran does respond and retaliate, then it becomes a justified pretext for expanding the war.”

Things don't sound quite as bad as they could be. No doubt there is going to be some tit for Israel's tat, but it would appear that the attack will likely not lead to an all-out war. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised to see the price of oil and the cost of shipping in the Red Sea going up again : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ_F5ykb_aE

Fun stuff!

Gaza war: Where does Israel get its weapons?

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-68737412

Israeli defence industry
Israel's Elbit Systems developed the Hermes 450 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) being used in Gaza
Israel has also built up its own defence industry with US help and now ranks as the ninth-largest arms exporter in the world, with a focus on advanced technological products rather than large-scale hardware.
It held a 2.3% share of global sales between 2019 and 2023, according to SIPRI, with India (37%), the Philippines (12%) and the US (8.7%) the three main recipients. The sales were worth $12.5bn (£9.9bn) in 2022, according to the Israeli defence ministry.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) made up 25% of those exports, followed by missiles, rockets and air defence systems (19%) and radar and electronic warfare systems (13%), the ministry said.
In September, just before the war began, Germany agreed a $3.5bn deal with Israel to buy the sophisticated Arrow 3 missile defence system, which intercepts long-range ballistic missiles. The deal - Israel's largest-ever - had to be approved by the US because it jointly developed the system.

US military stockpile in Israel
Israel is also home to a vast US arms depot set up in 1984 to pre-position supplies for its troops in case of a regional conflict, as well as to give Israel quick access to weapons in emergencies.
The Pentagon shipped about 300,000 155mm artillery shells from the War Reserve Stockpile Ammunition-Israel to Ukraine following the Russian invasion.
Stockpiled munitions at the depot have also reportedly been supplied to Israel since the start of the Gaza war.

https://breakingdefense.com/2024/04/epirus-pitching-anti-drone-tech-to-navy-as-potential-solution-for-red-sea/

SEA AIR SPACE 2024 — The Los Angeles-based technology contractor Epirus is preparing to test its high-power microwave capabilities in an upcoming Navy demonstration, one the company’s chief is pitching as  useful in the ongoing efforts to fend off Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

This “isn’t really a cost equation problem,” Andy Lowery, Epirus’ CEO, told Breaking Defense in an interview, referring to the Navy’s weekly expenditure of interceptors to protect shipping lanes in the Red Sea. “It is a bigger problem than that… The bigger problem is attrition. It’s the war of attrition.”

Lowery described his company’s technology, nicknamed Leonidas, as a phased array that can be directed at incoming threats, such as an unmanned surface vessel carrying explosives. The high-power microwave technology temporarily disrupts any electronics — while remaining harmless to humans — in its path, disabling a potential drone trying to connect with a US ship.

“We can put the beam in a huge wall of energy,” said Lowery. “We can make a wall of energy that takes up… 20 percent, 30 percent of the sky and create this wall of energy that doesn’t allow anything through it.”

The upcoming demo is the Navy’s Advanced Naval Technology Exercise, or ANTX, which will take place from June through September. ANTX is a recurring event, hosted by the Navy, designed to offer industry a chance to demonstrate its tech to the service’s research and development enterprise. The capabilities ANTX focuses on varies from year to year, but the event this year, dubbed Coastal Trident 2024, will focus on defending critical infrastructure, port and maritime domain awareness, augmented and virtual reality modeling and unmanned systems, according to a document outlining the event.

The aim of the demonstration for the Navy will be to set up numerous unmanned vessels representing potential threats and show how the high-power microwave tech can disable multiple vessels simultaneously — without expending valuable ammunition.

Epirus’ technology is already being used by the US Army which previously picked the capability in a 2018 competition hosted by the service’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office. That competition subsequently led to the service awarding contracts to several companies, including a $66 million deal to Epirus for at least four production units over the next several years.

Since the start of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas back in October, the US Navy has taken up positions in the Mediterranean and Red Seas, both to protect commercial shipping lanes from Houthi rebel attacks as well as try to prevent the conflict from spreading throughout the Middle East.

The warships on station have been successful at shooting down dozens of missiles and drones, but it has established a looming problem for big Navy in Washington, DC: How long can we do this before running out of ammo?

Some Navy officials have publicly bristled at the question, insisting the lives of sailors are priceless and no cost can be spared to ensure the safety of a ship. But Lowery, who himself is a retired Navy officer, said the service’s discomfort doesn’t change the answer to the problem.

“This is not a question of cost,” said Lowery. “This is a question of you running out of bullets. It’s not [about] how much those golden bullets are, it’s [about] you having no more in your magazine, and then having no bullets to protect those sailors with.”

Harmless to humans provided they wear tin foil hats.

Surely any electronics would be immune if inside a faraday cage.

What a great opportunity for sportsmen - offer pirate hunting expedition from a container ship, a lot like the 1880's "Buffalo Trains". Outside the 200 mile limit you get to "Leave your conscience at the Horn, boys..." Pirate Hunter income might offset the ships additional fuel costs and reduce ship insurance premiums. A brace of Barrett 50's would really let you "reach out & touch someone". Capitalism, red in tooth & claw.
My question has always been "Who funds, educates & facilitates the pirates international business deals?"  The pirates certainly don't have these business contacts & acumen. Maybe expertise from the nearby Seychelles, a hotbed of wealthy patrones?

Red Sea crisis drives Somali pirates into the Indian Ocean
Ship boardings have risen since November due to disrupted maritime traffic from Houthi attacks off the coast of Yemen
https://english.elpais.com/international/2024-04-11/red-sea-crisis-drives-somali-pirates-into-the-indian-ocean.
The MV Ruen was seized by Somali pirates, not combatants from Yemen. The notorious pirates once active off the coast of Somalia have resurfaced in the Arabian Sea to exploit rerouted Red Sea maritime traffic due to recent Houthi assaults on commercial vessels. Their new area of operation also avoids an increased military presence in the Red Sea. Three large merchant ships have been attacked in recent months and one is still held by pirates. In all, 18 smaller ships have come under attack and Somali pirates are still in command of seven. According to the European Union’s Atalanta anti-piracy naval operation based in Cádiz, Spain, several ships have reported suspicious activity and hijacking attempts. Operation Atalanta only has one vessel at its disposal — Victoria, a Spanish frigate.

By the 1800s, Native Americans learned to use horses to chase bison, dramatically expanding their hunting range. But then white trappers and traders introduced guns in the West, killing millions more buffalo for their hides. By the middle of the 19th century, even train passengers were shooting bison for sport

The spooky part here is this is also precisely the kind of mega-missile strike you'd need to be successful against a US Carrier group. The Eisenhower is in the Red, the Ford is in the Med. Iran, China and Russia are in an alliance. SOMEONE needs to be the initiator, possibly Xi & Vlad voted for Ali. Russia also sent a battleship group into the Red Sea two days ago. Hopefully OUR anti-missile laser defenses are fully operational. The shallow Red Sea is likely alive with subs. This could get really ugly really fast.

There's LOTS of disposable groups Iran could have sent against Israel. Odd how they telegraphed intent to attack, that move politely allowed our Carrier group plenty of time to pre-position deep into the Red Sea near Israel, below a big patch of empty desert. Get stocked up on rice, beans, water and Sterno just in case...
