I have always kept a spare key hidden on my motorcycles "just in case". However, I was unable to find a hiding place on my Interceptor that didn't require a key to access.  ::) So I decided to get a spare made and cut the 'head' off and put the blade in my wallet. That was challenging to say the least. When I bought the bike, the salesman said I would need to come in, armed with the tiny little metal tag that came with the original keys that has a 4 digit code stamped on it. He thought that, possibly having lost it I could use my VIN and of course proof of ownership. I first ordered blanks off fleabay here https://www.ebay.com/itm/144682852258 . Then I checked with Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and 2 different locksmiths, none of which could or would help. So I went to the dealer and was told by the Parts Dept gal that 'they don't do that'  ???, but she did give me the name and number of a locksmith that does this. I am finally a happy camper.

As it turns out, the locksmith copied my key with my blank (ebay), and it works fine. I asked if he had blanks that would work and he said that many late model Fords have ones that would work, and also KTM motorcycles. The 4 digit code was of no help. So hopefully this will help somebody here in the future. Also, the 'key' here (pun intended) to finding a locksmith is to ask if they have a laser key duplicator machine.

FWIW, I was charged $40 for the copy (my blank) and he would charge $10 for his blanks. This was, of course, in Snottsdale AZ. YMMV."

If you have one ignition key to copy from Timpsons charge £20 for a single key or £30 for 2. That is what they charged me for Kawasaki keys a few months ago. I wouldn't use them for fitting watch batteries though, they quoted me some ridiculous prices for that. This is in England of course where I live.

UPDATE: I am happy to report that I finally completed this 'project'. I used a Dremel tool to cut the plastic head of the new spare key. The remaining blade is small enough to keep in my wallet as originally planned, but I changed my mind and will wrap it in a small piece of Saran Wrap and Gorilla-Tape it in an inconspicuous place.

Ride safe out there.

Why cut the head off, (just an easier way to lose the key surely !) ,wouldn't it fit in your wallet anyway ?

I think you just learned that all people who claim to be locksmiths are not actually locksmiths and are instead simply a person who owns and operates a key cutting machine.

One of my local locksmiths will make you a key if you bring them the lock. Really handy if you have an old Japanese bike with three or four locks and a missing key.
