The Royal Enfield Factory has issued an airbox retrofit that can be added to all C5 motorcycles prior to chassis number 508555.

The retrofit addresses the issue of the airbox door vibrating while the bike is being operated at half-open to wide open throttle settings. The retrofit also addresses the issue of unfiltered air entering the airbox housing around the hinge area of the airbox. It also precludes any pieces from a failed latch assembly from inadvertently getting into the engine via the intake air tube. The airbox insert takes only seconds to install with a 13mm socket and can be done by the service shop or by the owner of the motorcycle.

The retrofit will be available from your dealer ONLY, so give them a call to remind them if your chassis number is lower than 508555. It is expected that the dealer will do a "group order" for the inserts as they have all the VIN's for the bikes whose owners may want them. The insert won't take any performance away from the bike at all - BUT - if you have an aftermarket (read "taller") air filter in the can - the insert won't work. Tell your dealer that you need part number 591681 and BE SURE to give him your chassis number for his records.

Thanks Bob :)  I wish I knew this when I went over at lunch to check on the parts I ordered.  Now I'll have to stop by on the way home too.  It's a tough life.

Hahaha! I know ....isn't it?? Be aware, guys - I sent this YOU before the dealers ..... Be easy on them if they give you the deer in the headlights looks and gently tell them to check their emails and FAX machines for the details ......  ;)

Justin, Pedro, and I already talked about it a few weeks ago.  They were happy to hear it was coming too.  I'll let them know you said hello ;)  As noted elsewhere on the board: RE, it's an old-fashioned thing.  Sometimes word of mouth beats e-mail.

I missed the cost.  How much is it?

Does this apply to the original owner only?  My nearest dealer is 100 miles away.

Thanks

Does this apply to Canadian C5s as well?  The lock on my airbox already popped from vibration - I keep it closed with hockey tape now.

It applies to bike with a chassis number lower than 508555. Check to see if your dealer uses the Postal Service or UPS .......  ;)

Andy - I'm not sure where the Canada bikes' chassis numbers start - you guys probably have a few of the bikes, however. Check with your dealer in Canada as I'm certain the Canadian distributor is aware of the retrofit and either has the inserts there - or on the way.

#505684 - that's my C5's chassi number.  So I guess I am in line for the air filter cover.  I'm wondering whether the K&N filter in there will still allow for the cover to work.

\On a related note...I should have the new Royal Enfield specific part number in the next few weeks for the K&N filter that fits INSIDE the stock airbox. It's going to be a slightly tapered filter to fit over the brackets and yet still inside the top plate.

I'll be ordering one of those.
