OK... I think the manual says something like "15-40W SL Rated semi-synthetic..."

What's the recommendation for lube in my '10 C5 Military?

Mike and S&S in Michigan
'07 Classic - Stumpy
'10 C5 Military - Sherman

Wesson will work in the thing as much as it oils .....  ;) But seriously - use a FULL synthetic with these guidelines:

tundra temp to 40F - 5W-30
40F-65F - 10W-40
65F+ - 15W-40 or 20W-50

The engine isn't picky about its oil viscosity - again, it pumps more oil than Saudi Arabia does in a day - but it MUST be full synthetic to assure that it doesn't coke off in the high stress areas of the engine.

If you just started another (ANOTHER!) gawd dang oil thread, expect a ticking package in the mail .... Hahahaha!  ::)

Fairly soon after break-in I switched from the 15w-50 semi-synth recommended in the manual, to 15w-50 fully synth as recommended by several folks here on the forum. The bike (G5) seems to like it fine. Silkolene, just because that's what the dealer used, but I don't think it matters at all.

Thanks for the reminder, WillW! - I forgot to say DO NOT USE CAR OIL IN THE BIKE! ... use motorcycle formulated oil because it has a higher level of ZDDP lubricants in it. Silkolene is great stuff!

Better than I could say it .....

Basically an extreme pressure lube additive that'll kill all the baby seals and such ..... IN theory ...... but it's like Pepsi - you GOTTA have it!!  ;)

They're Zippity Doo Dah Particles.  Doncha know nuthin...?  ::) ;)

I think WillW has a good point, these are Zpippty Doo Dah Particles ;D.

Since SB has a link to Wikipedia with chemical structures, I will try to simplify it to a  middle ground.

In very simple terms, ZDDP is Zinc, Sulfur and Phosphorous.

                                            Z = Zinc
                                            D = Di Alkyl
                                            D = Di Thio
                                            P = Phosphate

Di = Two
Alkyl = Carbon with hydrogen linked in a chain (1 to 14 Carbon long in ZDDP)
Thio = Sulfur

Singhg - Thanks for that - I'll break it down a little further since I'm in the hut now with my friend Michael Collins .........

The metallic parts of the ZDDP, being the zinc and sulfur "deposit" themselves on wear surfaces under heating and actually become the "sacrificial" wearing surface for the parts. Since the deposition and wear process is pretty much continuous, the actual parts never see (much) wear. New modern car oils don't have this in them as they metallic agents that would escape the combustion chamber and get into the exhaust stream would spoil the catalyst ...... and not having the additives, in the meantime, are spoiling the bearings .....  :'( Zippity Doo Dah Particles are your friends!  ;)

An absolutely incredible oil additive is Militec-1. It is FULL of ZDDP and was developed to keep "sheen guns" lubed up for the Military. I use it in about everything to keep the junque alive. Don't use it in the primary, however ......  ::)

So what you're saying is UCE can't use militec since there is no separation from the primary and engine compartment?  Damn, and I thought I would be able to even more militarize my G5 Military with Army oil.

You know - I put three ounces of it in the Crash Test Dummy and have had no slippage AT ALL on the clutch ...... I use it in the German's Doo-Katty as well to no ill effects - but you KNOW how the clutches in the Iron Barrels can be ........  ::)
