I concur on the backfiring, a little but not a lot.

Today I will be putting on the new K&N air filter and testing how it affects things, weather permitting.

I find no difference in mpg - I average 82 miles to the (UK) gallon. Just as well at around six quid a gallon  -  that's $9.50 equivalent, and diesel even more, so brace yourselves brothers in the USA -  you've got a way to go before we stop envying your cheap petrol prices......
A bit of backfiring, occasionally and seemingly at random. Some trips not at all.

I worked it out to $7.92 per U.S. Gallon  :o !!
No matter where you go, there, you are.

I've bought cars for less than it now costs to fill the tank. OK - nasty ugly cars, but most of em ran for a year or so....

It only costs me about $10US to fill my RE and that lasts for almost two weeks.  Maybe $30 for my Honda Civic if it's really low but I barely ever drive that.  I spend so little on gas that I don't even know what the price per gallon is.  It kills me when my wife pulls in with her Volvo to fill it up and it's over $50.

And I know we still pay nothing compared to what you folks in Europe spend.
