As this forum continues to grow, some have alluded to having  Moderator(s).

The forum is currently semi policed by CMW employees. They mainly act on complants.

Would forum volunteers be helpful?

I'll hold my thoughts pending further discussion.

No--we need no more moderators just less complaints.

Please tell me you're kidding.  I suppose you'd be volunteering yourself to start policing everything you don't like (banning Clamp)?

To answer your question, no I don not think it would be helpful.  I'd rather simply see all non bike related talk banned than see what you propose.  I'd probably stop hanging out here.  Guess what?  I see plenty of things I don't like on here and we are certainly not always on the same sides of these things.  If I care to join in I do so.  If not, I don't.  If we can't all be big boys and do that, then we don't deserve the freedom to have an off topic discussion area in the first place.

Good Idea!!  That would drive away the gawkers and lurkers and
leave only the true believers and faithful to play with themselves!!
Another Good Idea...  Let's tie THIS forum to the dues paying
members of the REA!!  Yea; that would make it even more exclusive...

I disagree...As long as everyone makes a attempt to respect each others opinion and does so in good faith I don't see any reason for this and quite frankly don't understand why its coming  up now..

I think if we truly had an issue, the good folks here would band up to take care of business.  As I see it now, Campfire Talk is just full of interesting links, a healthy debates.

The entire rest of the site is really only about what the topics state, and this is quite frankly the most respectful forum I've seen on all the interwebs.

It's on yourself to not get too riled up.  I've turned up the heat once or twice and wished I had kept my cool and maintained the humor.  Not posting a response is still always an option and the best way to keep the personal thermostat at a nice, cool temperature.

There is a huge difference between moderating and censoring.

Exactly who is suggesting censorship ?

Really Ice, a huge difference. I'd say its a fine line. Who is ging to watch the moderators? Why should someone else have control over what I read and respond to?

Yes big difference.

Mods ensure the forum rules are followed.

Censors filter information and squash what is deemed unacceptable.

Even presidential debates have moderators.

On this forum like many others the administrators oversee or are the moderators

Our mods make no deference as to content but do moderate behavior.

My question remains though,

Exactly who is suggesting censorship?

It's ironic that ol' Clamp was the first to respond.  ;)

This forum is probably one of the few that doesn't need a moderator, at least most of the time.  I have seen profanity making more of a presence lately.  Some people's culture has no problem with it, and with others it does.

Since we are an "adult" forum, I don't think there is too much need of a moderator.  A simple outright ban once in a while might be the best deterrent, when it is warranted.

We've always had regulation,,,,,I.E. forum rules number one through four.

The admins are the mods in cases where we are not self regulating.

Yes in definition there is a difference, but do I want some person I do not know deciding what is suitable for me to view or for me to respond to. NO thanks. By the way just because you post big doesn't make you correct, just loud. I think we are to some degree on the same side of this discussion.

As far as I'm concerned this is Kevin's forum.
He has nipped a few threads here and there and if he thinks that it needs more moderation then he should be asking for volunteers.

But if your taking nominations I nominate Leonard. At the Rally on the River last year he was kicking ass and taking names. A perfect choice.

The way I see it, REpozer is by implication, and so are you.  No one has convinced me this isn't just about being offended by Clamp. It sure seems the desired end result of one of you becoming a moderator is having the ability to delete posts by him and/or ban him from the forum.    REpozer uses the phrase "some have alluded to having moderators", but doesn't that just mean "myself and others who want Clamp banned"?

Br. baird4444 I think we may be on the verge of a mis understanding here and the air needs to be cleared.

In response to redcat I posted my understanding of who and what admin/mods and censors are, the differences between them, and what they do.

I am in no way endorsing censorship which is one thing I am vehemently opposed to.

I also pointed out our rules.

If my post came across to you in any other fashion please point out the error of my ways so I can learn to communicate more effectively.

I mean that earnestly.

Eamon

Explain or show the implication please. And I am asking politely and respectfully. I want to understand.

This is the first thread to my knowledge that anyone has brought up censors and in re reading this thread from the beginning, it was neither repozer nor my self who brought it up.

I do not see where reposers phrase "some have alluded to having moderators" means "myself and others who want Clamp banned"? rather it Indicates that he likely has received PM's that others who see a need for more active monitoring by the admins/mods or additional  mods if admin deems it wise.

Lets all be careful not to read too far into things. It happens all the time and mistakenly causes friction.

A relevant example is the quotation marks you put on the second phrase above.

Those marks imply that you are quoting him, which you are clearly not.

My take is that those were the punctuation marks that came closest to conveying a sense of wondering and what if,, but others may misunderstand it as an intentional misrepresentation.

Banning and deleting is a function of the admins and I would think, not done lightly.

I do not believe that Kevin and staff would just give that over to any old body.

As for clamp getting banned that is up to him and him alone, his choices his behavior.

No matter where you go, there, you are.

???  I clearly was.  It's quoted from his first sentence in this thread.

You say moderator, and I say what's to moderate if not people's posts?  What is there to do aside from editing or deleting?  Warn people they are about to be editied/deleted?

Anyhow.... I've said my piece.  Everybody behave, or else I'm going to moderate you all!   :P

And here's what I cant find in any of his posts.

"myself and others who want Clamp banned"?

That was the part I was referencing.

Anywhoo if some people would just be civil in the manner in which they choose to present their opinions of others race/creed/origins and not demean or belittle or trivialize, none of us would be having this discussion.

Yeah, I 'm cool with it as is.

But not all censorship is bad.  Somewhere along the way a mindset has fermented opposing any and all censorship.

That's what Kevin and CMW have done for a few select posts and posters.

Definitely.  It's Kevin's place and I'm fine with the minimal moderating and/or censoring that they have used.  I think if they wanted help they'd ask for it.

I think we have spent the entire day arguing about the fact that we agree with each other. I don't think the comparison to a moderator in a Political debate is accurate. Let the host run the ship. Get angry if you want, laugh if you can and ignore it if it raises your blood pressure. We are all adults here and life is to short to get bent out of shape about a chat room. I can hear Clamp laughing his ass off from here... Happy New Year to all of you!

very effective in dealing with the most unreasonable characters

But --I could be a moderator, infact I already am on another forum.

I think I am best suited, vote for me --I will not censor nothing ;)

Moderators cant ban, only clean up profanities and spam,--  but the admin usually gets to it before I do.

Na--there a good set of guys, a little boistrous at times but good lads.

Strange,--none of them ever told me to fuck off though Hmmm ille have to have a word with them about that, maybe they dont like me enough.

okay so Leonard u have the time to go to the rally and a regular at lanesboro...many of us are on this venue a couple of times a day every day of the year (year after year)..since baird has gracefully put forth your name as the protector of what is kosher and what isn't...could u provide us a bit more info like age, bio, etc...what is your relationship with baird...is  their any conflict of interest, etc...after all i would like to know whom I'm dealing with re. what's offbase and outside the norm with you.. If I seem skeptical pls don;t take it personal ...i wouldn't feel right about someone i didn't know anything about being the final purveyor of justice..

If you you have over 2000 post you should be a moderator..... Wait Clamp has a couple hundred more then me....never mind ;D

Down to business:
" Campfire Talk " can be a very wild animal. Good and bad. Overall I have enjoyed mostly good reading and getting to know several members on the forum.

I am a member of another forum that has "volunteer moderators" and I have found them to over bearing.

I don't think this forum needs them nor do I want them.

No body has angered me ...not even Clamp. I have learned long ago its okay to disagree with a person, even get disappointed  and still enjoy the talents that person may have.

If someone on this forum irritates me, fine. I don't have to eat and drink with them.I can log off.

Nobody has taken away anything that is sacride to me or anyone else that I know of.

The only thing I don't like are "f" words and so forth. I try to keep to things I wouldn't mind my family reading.

Overall,  great Campfire Talk........play ball!

Censorship ?  Admins to give up their duties to unsupervised mods ?

Exactly who is calling for  that ?  I must've missed it. ;)

I just love the way this thing has escalated...
REpozer threw out the idea this morning and almost 50 replies
later he has just responded.  I've really enjoyed this one but like
CJ  said; this is Kevin's forum. I'm betting it's going to stay the same
and that Leonard is trying to figure out a way to get even with CJ
and me.

okay so Leonard u have the time to go to the rally and a regular at lanesboro...many of us are on this venue a couple of times a day every day of the year (year after year)..since baird has gracefully put forth your name as the protector of what is kosher and what isn't...could u provide us a bit more info like age, bio, etc...what is your relationship with baird...is  their any conflict of interest, etc...after all i would like to know whom I'm dealing with re. what's offbase and outside the norm with you.. If I seem skeptical pls don;t take it personal ...i wouldn't feel right about someone i didn't know anything about being the final purveyor of justice..

On the outside chance that this is a serious inquiry let me say that I think you have taken seriously what I have poked at you in fun.  I am far to opinionated and set in my ways to ever be an impartial moderator.  As to my relationship with Baird....well we both own Royal Enfields  and both of us would let CJ work on our bikes any time.

leonard: I glad you responded as I feel the same way as you just stated, I would like to think that I would be fair and unbias ( Fox News) but  to be frank I can't guarantee that I could.  That  being stated, the blog has been selfhealing in itself and the admin side of things has been IMO quite impartial thus providing a mechanism of learning for everyone...I gotta tell ya I been jaming this thing for 4 years and even log on when on vacation...I was abrupt with you and I would say I'm sorry for that but to be honest I'm not as many of us find this a great escape from work and pressure associated with the daily  grind,,What we don't need is a demi god (Their enough of them about), we can all fight it out and teach each other a lesson or two Iin the process.  cheers

A lot of under the table humor going on here.
This is probably the most well mannered and informative RE forum out there and the least likely to need any form of moderation.
But anyway you look at it it's up to Kevin to ask for volunteers not the membership. It is our forum but all he has to do is turn off a plug strip and it's over.

Not true, this is funded by people buying goods from Classic Motor Works. If that money were to stop flowing, this website would be gone in a NY minute.

Yep, too bad they are out of 30mm, for a lousy hundred bucks it would be fun to play with that Amal. They bill it as "old school" but it looks as modern as a Mic. First time I've ever seen one

100 dollar cheap ??

I can buy brand new Mikuis or Kiehns for 650 baht ---30 US dollar to the baht.

    21 dollar and 60 cents

    They are 28 30 mm.

If I were ever to change the Re carb I would go diaphragm CV .

You know how us Yanks are..   :P

last BMW sports bike I had , put a high performace chip in..  took it out on a straightawy.. crouched down at 80.. locked the throttle to full on.. and counted to 10..

176 later and pulling, I backed off..

One would think I'm to old to have the need for speed..  however.. what a rush ;D
