Theres a street near me with one of those electronic road side trailers that reads your actual speed as you motor by. I was curious about my Classic, so I rode by with my speedo  reading right at 30mph. The electronic readout was 26mph.So I  figure if my speedo reads 40mph, its probably about an actual 36mph. Is that about what others are experiencing?

Yup, actually I find the faster I go, the more off the speedo gets. I don't pay too much attention to it anyways.

Yeah, about 10% off give or take.

My friend calls it 40 emph (enfield miles per hour). That's around 35 mph to non-RE rides!

My 95 and my 99 were/are about 10% off too.
Keeps me honest because I tend to "exceed" at times.

Yep - at an indicated 60 MPH it's actually 53 - 54 MPH.  So I cruise at an indicated 60 MPH.

The speedo on my X seems to be pretty close, except after 60, I have no idea how fast I'm going because the needle dances around so much.

Mine reads 10mph over actual speed, when traveling 50 and above. This is per GPS. When I first got it I didn't think I was going 80, thats when the GPS burst my bubble.

I have two Indian made vehicles - one scooter and one Bullet.  They both have Indian made speedos.  Neither is very accurate, but I can tell you that 60 on the Bullet is absolutely faster than 60 on the scooter.

I checked the scooter last summer with my Garmin.  60 on the speedo was 50 on the GPS.  Right now it's too darn cold to try to check the Bullet.  But I will check it when it warms up.

I did the same thing--checking my speedo against a trailer mounted radar sign. At 30 mph it matched, at 40 on speedo sign read 36, at 50 on speedo sign read 44mph. Then I started thinking they probably put this thing here because of speeding complaints in the neighborhood and here I am running 50 mph in a 25 zone --probably not a good idea--

And there was you thinking originally they'd just put it there as your very own speedo testing rig? LOVL  ;D

When my Classic's speedo reads 60, my GPS says 55, at 50, 45, at 40, 36. :P

Well, the factory seems to be doing rather well at making all the speedos read 10% fast.

I wonder why they can't just get the same consistency in making them read correctly?

Obviously, they make the speedos' all the same.
Do they actually not realize that they are all wrong?
Or don't they care?

In the early '60s all Asian bike speedos read fast and the faster you went the faster they read. Made you think your Honda or Yammy was really movin on. Even the BMW speedos were a little optimistic but they they were true across the band.
So the Indians may just have jumped on the '60s trend and stayed there.

I hooked up my GPS based bicycle computer to mine one day. The Enfield speedo seemed to run about 5mph high across the board.
