Can anyone recommend a tach for the Electra X?
(A stable, smooth, steady one - not one of those bouncy bouncy bouncy ones!)

tia,
Matt

I have found some aftermarket tachs on the internet for less than $100. They are small, just less than two inches in diameter, and clamp on to the handlebars. There are several of these and some look pretty good. They are designed for custom cruisers so the quality should be acceptable. I hope the next RE catelog carries something like this.

We are interested in carrying a less expensive alternative than the Smiths tach, but........have not been able to locate a nice looking tach that will work with single cylinder and points ignition. Should be easier for the Electra. If you find anything please e-mail us and we will take a look.

Tachometer (US) = Rev Counter (UK) ?

Not long ago people in the UK were talking about a small digital model which clamped to the handlebar and read ignition pulses from a wire wrapped around the plug-lead.  That's all I can remember but I think they were made in the USA.

I'd be interested in finding one of those, not to mount on the bike, but a hand-held one for tuning.

I think that what you are looking for in a hand-held or square digital is called a "Tiny Tach"

I've seen the Tiny Tach and wasn't impressed. I typed motorcycle tachometers into my search engine and came up with numerous options that would work on a single. ebay also has quite a few.

I'm reluctant to just buy one without good testimony from an Electra X owner. The electric tachs today can work fine on one bike and not on another. (I had an aftermarket electric tach on my Ural and it worked great. When I upgraded the engine to a 750 the tach needle was nervous and downright bouncy often times. Both engines had electronic ignitions and similar coil set-ups). The Smith's has a good reputation but it is expensive and HUGE. Maybe the best bet would be one of the smaller cheaper ones that wraps onto my ignition wire.

If anyone has a success story with a small(ish) tach on an Electra X please share it!

Thanks,
Matt

I have found a few good looking ones on the internet. One in particular, I think it is from J&B Cycles, is chrome and bullet-shaped with a face size of just about two inches. They said it is designed to work on any bike so I assume it can be used on a single. I'm going to let the parts guy at my dealership help me pick the right one. I plan on installing one in the next few months. I'll post my results.

My dealer helped me find a tach that should work on the Electra. It is from Drag Specialists, and is a basic 8000 rpm mini tach that mounts on the hadlebar. It is electronic and shouls work with a single-syclindar engine. It is chrome, looks good, and only costs $74. I'm going to order one and give it a try. I'll post my results.

I look forward to hearing your findings - with of course, the obligatory pictures.
