A few months ago Harley Davidson had set up dealerships in India and introduced 12 models for Indian market.  The recent news is that HD is settting up an assembly plant to put together the bikes there.  That will bring down the cost of bikes sold in India.

I read this in the Dealer News - and was elated! Hahaha! Finally - Harley will be assembled with CARE! Heeheehee! Actually - it should be interesting to see how this shakes out - you KNOW it's just a precursor to cut their assembly costs - there has probably been a team of edgy accountants all over it. India is an excellent choice for that kind of assembly. I think the fellows over there "get it" on about every level - and the REM folks may glean a little info on what makes the American bike market tick. It's a winner all the way around, I think.
Spare the pig iron - spoil the part!

I can buy a new Mitsubishi Titon 4 wheel drive with leather seat ,AC central locking etc etc for 1/2 the cost of the top of the range Harley bagger here in Thailand.

    I was told that the dealership is being took away from the "Power house" dealer because he cant fullfil his contract of selling 300 bikes a year.

    There is something like 30 bike gangs here in Pattaya. One in particular will not ride or even speak to non Harley owners.

     Ha now they have Indian built bikes ha ha.---- wankers.

ScoTTy - They are GANGS, man .... they work harder at thuggery than they EVER would at a real job .... that's how they get their dough. Bad attitude, a few jailhouse tats and a Harley ..... makes me glad that I have an Enfield! You meet the nicest people on one ....  ;)

@1 Thump:

CKD - is basically a complete kit of parts that can be put together to make a product.  Something like Ikea furniture or drawer chest, or electronic kit to make a gadget.   The exact nature of how much assembly is required is upto the seller - may be wheels, engine, frame, chain, brake, and electric wiring harness will be sent as parts of a kit with directions to assemble it into a HD.  Eventually, locally made parts may become part of the 'assembly'.

Allmost sounds like the Royal Enfield saga. 50 years in the future, the world will discover 2010 model Harleys still for sale. History repeating itself....

Scotty, the gangs /clubs are mostly retired expats, no one works-- we just sit around in bars playing with girls waiting for the next bike ride to a bar where we drink beer and play with girls.

       "The Immortals" the Bangkok gang is probably the biggest with rich Thais they usualy ride in what looks like a  hundred and have police motorcade. The sound. is like thunder.

       Then there is the Jesters the ones that shun non Harley owners, mostly American high fiving black shirted bigots but they do a lot for charity.

     Then there is the "Bulldogs"   and my gang the 'Wankers' which I am starting next week but you have to own a  pair of white overhauls and fourescent orange safety vest with 'Wanker " on the back.   Im hoping it will be popular.

That's a horrible wig that Jerry Lee Lewis is wearing.  Funny song, though.
