I ordered the 50's silencer from our gracious hosts. I opened it up to find the "slight modification that may or may not be necessary" in reality is about an 8 inch gap from the end of the header pipe to the start of the silencer. Did they forget to package an extension with the silencer or is stretching the silencer 8 inches the slight mod they mentioned? I tried attaching the silencer to the header to see where that put the attachment bracket and it puts it where the clutch cable attaches. There is no mounting it there. Any thoughts gentlemen?

You'll probably end up swapping out the head pipe also.  The original isn't the same length.

You could go down to the local mom and pop muffler shop and get a piece made for $20 or so,  will not be pretty tho...

Does not look like the Indian one I had,  looks Brit to me (picture 1)...

CMW said they had no complete exhaust replacement for the AVL. the bolt on style header i assume being the difference.

Rowediddy, you may want to try reversing the muffler bracket to where it closes the gap to the front. Remove the rear foot peg and anything else you may need to get to it. You may have to bend the bracket around. Back in '07 I had ordered a kit for the Electra and it included a slightly longer head pipe. I ended up throwing away the bracket you have and wound up using the factory muffler bracket.  BTW the other pic you posted shows a muffler with a longer input pipe that would most likely work in your situation. Here's a pic of  mine if it helps any.

unfortunately the bracket is welded to the silencer not bolted so removing it or reversing it isn't an option.

Rowediddy,

If up swept exhausts are to your liking then I would like to suggest searching the photo gallery for pics of the Harris Scrambler.

Br. Bill Harris cleverly used an elbow pipe between the short silencer and head pipe then and attached the bracket to the passenger foot peg mounting.

Looks and sounds great IMHO.

No matter where you go, there, you are.

CMW also told me that there were no replacement headers for my AVL classic, or any AVL engine.  I swear I've seen ones in pictures, though!

If our hosts really don't stock de-restricted replacement Electra-X/AVL Classic header pipes, there ia a well-known supplier across the pond who does...

Regards,

A.

I just bought one of these on ebay thats made to fit and bolt up to the original mounts. When it arrives I will give a report. The price was $76 shipped to the door.

Keep us informed on the part/shipping quality of this eBay vendor. I wonder about some of these vendors from India and the parts they sell. Hopefully you get what you ordered. That vendor has single-handedly taken over the RE section and increased the parts inventory on eBay by about 60% which makes me wonder about the quality and authenticity of their parts. Has anyone else bought parts from this eBay vendor?

Got an email in to the Brits. Hoping I can buy a header pipe that will match the silencer from CMW. We'll see. Thanks for the input gents.
