I checked the voltage to the LEDs (gray wire from right handlebar switch) using an oscilloscope and it runs about 14 volts with a short spike (about 1 more volt, I think--did not write it down) at each sparkplug firing.  On http://reuk.co.uk, I found a circuit for a voltage regulator using an LM2940T-12 and a 100uF capacitor.  I assembled the regulator on a test board today and it completely smooths the voltage at 12 volts.

Since the LEDs are pretty cheap, they likely have only a resistor to limit the current and so depend upon steady supply voltage.  Two to three extra volts will let them draw too much current, which will wreck them.  I will see if the regulator helps as I will replace all the LEDs.

I will install it next week after I receive some Hitachi connectors to let me add it without cutting wires.

Bookmarked for DavidMeermans update  ;) ;)

Btw, this voltage regulator you mention,,is it a thermal resistor ?

Fellas, are there any L.E.D.s that survive in elevated temperature enviroments ?
It would be nice to have an LED pilot lamp for use in my H4 halogen headlamp .

yeah fit some LED's

Im not --I enjoy the simplicity of the simple bike I bought, becaue a simple bike is what I wanted .
The last thing I want Is a fuel injected common rail  car or bike with leds or anything.

Points and condenser  please,,--Oh and light bulbs.

   Geeeez go by a Hyabusa.
I would never be a member of a cub that would have me as a member

No, it is a true regulator.  I have attached the datasheet.  This one is designed to operate within 1/2 volt of the supply voltage.

Happy T-day,

In my case the idea is light with low current draw= greater battery reserve in order to limp home when the ghost of Lucas in league with Murphy conspire to eat my voltage regulator/rectifier,,at night, in the rain, on the trail,, 20 miles from nowhere  ;D

That and the Hyabusa would make a poor choice for of road riding.
