Hi all,
We had a great weekend's racing at Pembrey [Wales, U.K.], with the Cotrell Crusader taking three 2nd and one 3rd place [a VERY rapid Rudge winning all four races]
The 350 Clipper fought off Manxes, Goldies, Velos etc to take a 3rd followed by a win, and coming ahead of midfield in an open 'Scratch Race' beating several big twins and at least one triple, before falling ill on the second day in it's first race.
The 500 was the big surprise, taking three wins and one [very close] second over the weekend, the most impressive win being in the last race of the second day where she came home over 200 yards ahead of the second placed Weslake!. This machine did battle with two Seeley G50s, Seeley Weslake 500 twin, BSA B50 and Ducati 450 and others and came home in good running order and almost spotlessly clean.
Got to try and fix that 350 in time for Cadwell in three weeks time!
 B.W.

Beautiful pictures.  Great to see Royal Enfields winning in these races.  Congratulations.

What were the engine or other modifications on these bikes ?

Hi Singhg5,
There are lots of modifications to the 500, including a shortened Manx frame. There is nothing too fancy in the engine, but it has a 38mm Amal MKII carb and port, 13.5  to 1 compression ratio and four main bearings supporting a lightened crank assembly. a Bob Newby clutch and belt take the power to a 5 speed box. she had 49.9 bhp at the rear wheel, when last on the dyno, but I suspect she has a little more since some recent work was done.
The 350 has more R.E. parts inside than many folk believe, with squish head, 13.5 to 1 compression, my own cam profiles. An Amal TT carb is fitted of 1 7/32", Burton Bikes clutch [alloy drum], 5 speed box and modified Crusader rolling chassis with Honda fork internals with 2 - way damping and adjustable preload on the springs. The modified front brake will lift the rear wheel if applied hard enough at any speed and does not fade. This machine is much smaller and lighter than any Manx or Goldie, it too has a lightened crank and produces 35.5 bhp at the rear wheel.
Both machines have our own exhaust systems, the 350 knocks out a very low 92 db @ 3700 rpm for noise tests, but gets louder up the rev range!

Whoa!  BW, those two picks of the racing-RE's are BAD ASS!  Great photos... What kick ass looking machines.  And they look really cool with the full, modern racing gear too.  Little old, little new.  Really great stuff.

Congrats on the wins!

(I can't look at those pics without making racing sounds).

Thanks Boggy!
The 350 should be running again tomorrow and now has an obscene compression ratio of nearly 14.5:1 [was just  over 13:1 before the holed oiston], so if all is well, she may be the best yet, if she doesn't go off like a grenade!
Fingers crossed, though, as we have racing at Cadwell Park in just over a week.

Great machines, B.W. !
Best of luck at Cadwell.

Much higher compression than that, and she'll qualify for a diesel rating!

Thanks Ace!
I had her running again today [dyno tomorrow]. I have stopped making predictions before going on the dyno a long time ago, but she sounds a good bit more angry than before and shot away in second from a standing start when I thought I had hooked first gear!
Everything else is unchanged - cams, timing etc, although the spare crank [now in use] has a roller big end instead of plain and is very slightly lighter, but only by a few  ounces. This engine now has the + 0.060" permissible oversize of the 34 bhp 13:1 motor and the cylinder head of the +0.020" 35.5 bhp 13.5:1  motor. It would be nice to beat both those figures, but just to get her set up for the last round next weekend would do !

Hi Cabo Cruz,
Thanks for your good wishes, this is a 'stop gap' motor which could go 'BANG' at any moment, but if it can lift the 'Curse of Cadwell' that has followed us for a few seasons, that will do!
The MK III 350 motor is on the bench for next season ...
