Took delivery of my red C5 on Sept 1st. Completed 350 miles so far :) No real problems, fuel cap leaking if I brim tank on centre stand then park on side stand, but otherwise runs well, and engine starting to free up nicely. Averaged 87 mpg so far too. Huge change from my CB1300 Honda :)

Regards,

Ray

Very nice!  Did the larger headlamp and visor come with as new or did you have them installed.

87mpg, Imperial gallon?

Beautiful bike! you'll have a lot of fun with it.
On the eighth day God created the C5, and it was better looking than anything on the planet.

Hi Ray, nice, don't forget to change the oil soon.

My dealer has said to run it to 500 miles before service. Did query it, but I know they have lots of experience with these bikes.

Welcome Ray:

Bigger headlight and visor are so awesome on your RE.  Don't get that as standard on G5 (Electra in UK) in USA.  Wish you many happy miles on your C5.

Hi Ray

Lovely bike, I recently rode an identical one which was loaned to me while my Clubman was in for its 1st service, and like you this was at the 500 mile mark which was also recommended by my dealer. The engine gets better!!  ;D

...fuel cap leaking if I brim tank on centre stand then park on side stand,

Yeah, it has the leakiest gas cap I think I've ever seen.  I've taken to keeping a cloth in my pocket to wipe down the tank.  Even with underfilling, sudden acceleration or braking can cause a leak.

I recently did an 800 km trip (400km one-way).  My speed on the first leg was in the 100 to 110 km/h range and consumed about 15 litres, which works out to about 75 mpg Imperial.  The trip home was at night, in the rain, and I kept my speed in the 70 to 80 km/h area on secondary routes.  I only used 11.4 litres.  That's almost 100 mpg Imperial.  After 400 km (250 miles or so)  I hadn't even hit reserve.  Most folks don't want to drive at 50 mph though.  :-)

Keep it tight, keep it lubed, make sure that seal on the airbox is good and tight, and - while you've still got the enamel on - address that issue of the speedometer cable rubbing on the front mudguard. It wears through quickly.

And have fun!

Any get your fuel cap rubber seal changed under warranty. Mine does not allow spileage even if the tank is brim full and the bike is on side stand  :P

Unfortunately, my dealer is not near by and, based on some other experiences, I don't have any faith in them anyway.  They really did a poor job setting up the bike, they never reply to my emails (do they want me to call them long-distance???), and the last I heard they didn't even have oil filters in stock yet.

When my speedometer cable snapped, I was able to get a new one shipped from another country and installed myself before they even replied to me that they didn't have one.  Not encouraging.
