I've been looking now for a while and I found a few tachs but will they work with the avl? Anyone know off hand.

1) Equus 6076 clips to the spark plug wire but its looks dont match the RE classic style.

2) Mini Tachometer Jpcycles looks awsome on an Iron barrel but will it work with the AVL?

3) tiny tach digital small not top of my list.

Wow- that looks sweet!

So how does that J&P hook up?  What's redline on an AVL, anyway?
Any of you have a picture of it on your bike?  Does it just clamp to the handle bars?

Here's a pic of the jpcycles #5600076 tach on my Enfield. http://www.enfieldmotorcycles.com/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=864
I hooked up mine to the handlebars with it's included mounting bracket following the enclosed instructions, also I believe I hooked up my tach signal wire right to the connector at the coil. white wire w/ red stripe? Someone will chime in, if not I'll pull my tank to check over the weekend.

Shoot- that's is where my lucky horn is on my bike.  I've had it on every bike for almost 40 years- it's not going anywhere.  Maybe on the right side...

So what's this business about single and double fire whoosie?
I've had my tank(s) off a million times, yet never even noticed the coil... So somewhow this gizmo measures / counts the electrical impulses of the coil?
How did you figure out what redline is?

I think the "red-line" is 5 K but I've never taken it above 4500. No need to shift in the torque band.

I never noticed a coil on my AVL... then again I'm looking for the standard vegatable can with 3 wires. If the avl has a coil then I know which one I want.

The redline shouldn't be at 5000 rpm. Usually engine manufactures say Max. Power @... 5000 rpm for the AVL engine. That way people arent blowing up there engines and sueing left and right.

Hey Enfield Jake does the tach automaticaly work with a single cylinder or did you need to use any resistors....

Where did the bloody spell check go?

No resistors needed. I know for a fact that it works with a 2006 Electra. There are no switches available on it to make adjustments. For slightly more in depth information check this post out: http://www.enfieldmotorcycles.com/forum/index.php/topic,92.0.html

Although a tach would be nice, I'd e happy just to have a speedo that worked. The way my needle dances around, all I know is that I'm going somewhere between 40 and 60+.

catastrophe, that's what were here for. to exchange knowledge and other info.

luoma, have you tried lubing and making the path the inner speedo cable makes as straight as gently curved as possible? When I replaced my front tire I shifted the part that goes on the wheel around and my needle is pretty steady. Only uneven surfaces such as bumps cause it to deviate in that manner.

I've ordered in one of those Phi Tesla Radon speedometers (it only took two months for a reply from them, then another month for them to ship it out, but it's a small outfit so I understand).  The online manual for the Radon has the tach splice into a white wire coming off of the CDI...

I must let you know I got the tach from jp cycles and it works great. It was easy to hook up. When I went for a ride, I found that around 60 70 the bike averaged between 4000rpms and 4500rpms. I think I may have been wrong about the whole 5000rpm not the redline. Once I have my next oil change I'll doo another speed test and check.

What front sprocket are you running? Stock? I'm running a 19T front and those figures sound rather high... If I recall off the top of my head I'm running 3700RPM at around 62 MPH.

hmm I'm running 19T as well. I'll have to double check the readings... I wrote the message a few days after riding so I may be mistaken.

I have been looking for a tacho the same size as the ammeter, so i can drill out where the ignition switch goes and put it there, must be 42mm to fit though. Most of the hole has been machined from underneath, factory just leaves that bit of metal on top of the casting to make the fancy bit to mount ignition switch. Have scoured the net.......best i can find is 52mm. Want to mount in casquette rather than outboard of the handlebars :)

I was looking at tachs for a longtime and I could never find one small enough to fit in the bike.

Anyway I went riding again today... The numbers are in they are 2700 rpm at 40mph 3000 rpm at 50 and 3900 at 70mph all taken while in 5th gear.

With the tach on my radon, it seems like I'm going 38mph at 3,300 RPM in 3rd gear, and the engine seems like it's going awful fast.  Around 2,400rpm at the same speed (38) in fourth gear, which the engine thinks is a bit low.  Sweet spot seems to be 2,700 RPM

that sounds about right... for me between 3000 and 3500 is the sweet spot. At 2700 I can feel the lug, so I tend to shift down to fourth gear.

UPDATE my front right turn signal fell off and was hanging by the wires yesterday! Awsome the factory bracket broke. Add it to the list.
