I'm trying to get a handle on this. People have mentioned it piecemeal, so let's compile it. My 2009 G-5 never got better than low 60's even during easy breakin, but the C-5's that I know of have done much better, so  here's a survey to find out the ranges of the two models: G-5 vs. C-5:

I'll add top speed to this. Best mine will do is 82 indicated, tucked in and level.

OK, I think this will be really interesting but let's also state US or imperial gallon for accuracy as this is a worldwide forum in practice.

So my 2009 G5 Clubman (with open pipe) has done 80 mpg worst and 92 mpg best, imperial gallons. Average is 85mpg; I usually travel between 60 and 70 indicated and top speed has been 85 indicated. I have never used full throttle.

Should also add 87 octane (r+m/2), throttle pegged. I might try 92 (r+m/2) and see what happens, both speed and mpg.

Good point.  I used 92 octane, which may or may not change things.  What about tire pressure?  The manual says 18/20psi for f/r.  That seems low.  What are other riders setting the psi at?

Also, isn't the G5 gearing differently than the C5?

The tire pressures in the manual must be a mis print, it's too low. I run 27psi in front and 29 in the rear on my C5. I get 80-85 mpg and I have no idea what the top speed is, and I doubt that I'll ever know. :D

The plate on the front down tube states 24 psi front, 32 psi rear. I' m still experimenting with the 19" front wheel. But thats my starting point. I've noticed after fill up, the tank lasts forever :D

I average 85 mpg  -  UK gallon. Worst was 79 (lot of short rides) best 89. I rarely exceed 60mph, but occasionally 70-75 for short stretches. Changing from stock exhaust to Goldie made no difference to mpg.
Tyre pressures  -  27 front, 29 rear, on Avon Road Riders.

You may not believe these figures, but they're accurate! I ride mostly between 50 and 65 mph and accelerate briskly but smoothly. Riding like this, I have achieved a worst figure of 82 mpg (UK gallons) and a best of 97! Riding to and from work gives 86 and longer runs about 94. You can check my fuelling on www.fuelly.com and it shows in US gallons.Fuelly is a great site if you want to monitor your fuel consumption - lets get more Enfields on it! :)

My G5 consistently gives 70 mpg (US gallon), that would be equivalent to 83 mpg (British gallon).  I ride small town roads at speeds between 30 - 60 mph, so it includes traffic light stops and slow traffic.  I add Star Tron fuel treatment to regular gas.  It keeps the lines clean, prevents fuel degradation, and easy start in cold weather.

Addition of Star Tron does not affect mileage.  Premium gas makes no difference in mileage either.  Premium gas does offer easy start up in winter.

My C5 is over the magic 600 mile break in now, so I suspect it will improve some (?).  I average about 70 mpg with mine in mixed around town (stop and go) traffic and back country roads. I use premium because there is one station locally that has "no ethanol" gas, but only in premium.  Also, rear tire pressure is 28 or so psi and front is 25 or so.

From the first kilometer on my precious developed only modest thirst. With tire pressure of 30/35 PSI it consumes 2,9 - 3,2 L, that is 87-97 mpg (imperial). Top Speed is 140 km/h or 87 mph on a flat road without wind.
@ jjoe: gearing is almost the same, the G5 has 19´wheel and 17-tooth-sprocket, the C5 has 18´ and 18 tooth. The difference is within the the slip of your tire.

I talked to a Shell distributor today who said all brands and grades of gas-except marinas-in Washington State are mandated to have <10%ethanol content, so non-ethanol gas is not an option. Here's a link for all states:

Ethanol reduces fuel economy and can adversely affect some rubber or polymer parts.
Most modern vehicles can tolerate it, but the fuel economy still suffers.

Ethanol sucks A$$! Using corn that could OTHERWISE be turned into good old Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey ..... or food ....... for motor fuel is an egregious violation of MY trust! It's downright Comma-nist or something or other .....  >:(

Bob,
Couldn't agree more.  It also mucks up carbs and literally eats the fuel lines on my old cars.  I can count on a rebuild of the carbs on my old snowmobiles every other season with ethanol/gas.  I don't know if it would have an adverse effect on an Enfield, but I'm not taking any chances.  False economy when you spend a couple of cents more per gallon and nearly a hundred bucks to re-build the three carbs on a triple snowmobile (not counting my time)!

I wouldn't mind hearing some longer term reports from folks who have it in every grade and have no choice BUT to use it.  Any ill effects?

All the gas sold in my area has Ethanol in it, whether you buy regular or premium.  So no choice here  :(.   To prevent any problems due to ethanol, I add Star Tron Enzyme Fuel treatment as I mentioned earlier.  It is supposed to help with problems caused by ethanol.  Here is the link and you can read the detailes.  It seems to be better than Sta-bil.  Don't have hard proof or number but just my perception and what some others have said.

My old, inefficient  carb, power robbing , primary, and gear  box, AVL engine, seems to get better MPG then some of you .
Ethanol ? Tire pressure? It all adds up, but thought EFI computers did a little  better job fine tuning…..but guess not.

I have quite a few rigs in "storage mode" - too many bikes and not enough time .... and I either keep them empty - or with 100LL AvGas in the tank. I haven't had to rebuild a carb in YEARS. Most of the bike carbs that I get nowadays that have died from sitting with pump gas in 'em can't be salvaged. The sh!t-for-gas dries up into concrete - and no GOOD carb cleaner (trichlorethane!) is available any more to eat the crud out of them. It's sad ..... the Gub'Mint and the oil industry - along with the powerful motor vehicle industry has all but ASSURED that we are going to buy a new car or bike every five years by killing the old ones with the miserable crud that we call "motor fuel" ........  >:( I totally feel your pain if you have an old car that you're trying to keep and enjoy ..... 60 octane drip gas would almost be better for one than the stuff currently available ...... sigh ........  :(
