I made a low fuel alarm to alert me to an impending outage.  Although I keep track of my miles, the actual end of the gas is always a surprise.  Since I do not like to buy gas--part of not liking to spend time in transit--I do not buy early, but wait until I must.

I hope you find this useful.

Regards,

Dave M

Got it, ingenious.  But I'll just go with when I switch to reserve and add 25 miles.  Has seemed to work so far.

That is clever, and it something I will try to build.just for fun.  I was wondering about the 47 ohm resistor at the LED.  Is that the correct or should it be 470?  I can't remember but I have burned a few LED with the wrong resistor.

This does look nifty, but how would it help?  Does it go off appreciably before the carb actually dries out?

O.K, Which national lab do you work for? I'm at Brookhaven on L.I. By the way, I opted for the twist gas cap conversion. 3 screws $67 no key. Then you can use the two optical sensors that you allready have. :D

I think the resistor is correct.  As I recall, the LED draws 150mA (5v supply, 1.7v forward).

The purpose is to beep before the carb dries out.  The warning only eliminates the actual surprise of running out of gas before you switch to the reserve.  I do not like the sputter-cough-pop surprise of actually running out.  Once on reserve, I go buy gas having pushed a little Honda too many times thinking there was plenty in the reserve.

Dave M

Got a picture of that gas cap conversion mounted on the tank?

I have got the down load off David. As I was reading it I was already realising that this tells you when you fuel pipe is empty and will have a few hundred yds left of fuel.

I was thinking some how of this very clever and simple way of devising some sort of similar system with fuel in a pipe design but one that will warn of low level.

Perhaps that same  clear fuel pipe taken off a T and then up under the stock area and looped back down again . This pipe would contain fuel relating to the level in the tank . An alarm could be anywhere in this pipe meaning a warning of 2 liters remaining!!

Why stop there, How about a 12 volt servo that turns the petcock to reserve? Then, instead of a buzzer, you could have a sexy womens voice ask for $5.

Sorry --my description of a slightly different place to which to put the devise seems to have been misunderstood.
Its exactly the same thing but in an external tube showing fuel level.  Its hardly any different only you can have a 1-or 2 liter warning.

I cant do the electronics bit though, Its well explained and to David it is easy. It very professionally drawn too
