... bolted the good way.
Excellent ride.  ;D

Noticed loss of oil.
Found out a corner of the right hand cover gasket went awol.
Turned out a 1000 mile gasket.  ::)

I rode up to a British Bike show/tell/parts event in North Phoenix today.

Lots of Triumphs, some BSA's, a Matchless 350 single and several Nortons.  For a while, I had the only street legal Royal Enfield and it got a lot of attention. :)

One guy had a Royal Enfield 350cc Fury in the back of his pickup truck.  It was set up for flat track with no front brake.
The competition cylinder head on that bike was huge!  Doing a little reading I see where the 350 Fury was apparently only made in 1961?   He only wanted $7,000 for it so I let him keep it.

As I was leaving, I did see a green Royal Enfield Iron Barrel parked so I stopped for a bit to see if I could locate the owner.
After three different people asked me about my G5, the owner of the Iron Barrel still hadn't shown up so I left for home.
If he's/she's a member here, perhaps he/she will speak up?

Anyway, it was a nice day for a ride with the temperatures in the low 60's (F.).  ;D

I meant to get out there to that show but I got busy with family stuff.

As for what I did to mine today, I got to ride it to and from work, which is something most people in the northern hemisphere can't say right now.

I have a few days off work so I plan on some maintenance - fluid changes, front drum shoe replacement/cleaning/adjusting/cable lube.  I'm going to employ that Hitchcocks mod to the top trunnion.  Any pitfalls I should be aware of doing this?

Did you get that 002 from Barney?  If so, the front brake defenitely needs adjusting.
It should ba able to almost lock up the front tire and when I rode it, it was dong good to stop from 30 mph in 150 feet.

Yup, I have Barney's bike.  He may have adjusted between when you looked at it and when I bought it, to me its front brake performance is on par with my friend's '99 which has the same set up.  I've been riding it as my commuter for the last three months in city traffic and I haven't had concerns for safety with it.  I just know it could be better.

The main reason I'm breaking into it (pun intended, go ahead and laugh) is because I've already put more miles on it in the last 3 months than Barney did over several years and I have some time off to do it.  That Hitchcocks mod looks promising, and it is free!  I'll take pictures and share the work in the Iron section once I get into it.

I have some.  I've got stock and the copper crush style from Aircraft Spruce.  PM me your address and which kind you'd like if you need one.  Oh, and I went with copper, I figure it's less likely to blow out ;)

For myself, I removed the Ford starter relay and installed one from a lawn mower.  The Ford wouldn't kick if the headlight was on.  This one works fine and bolted right up with no mods required.  It's only $13 at Home Depot, part # 490-250-0013:

Yup, I've officially got lawn mower parts on my bike now  ::)

Also, if you get the full sized MotoBatt AGM battery, just skip the little bolt on posts and bolt the cables right to the battery.  It's way easier to get the battery in that way and seems to be just fine.

Thanks for the offer but im going to order up 2 or 3 of them. Im thinking of swapping exhausts at some point.

I have never heard of a 350 Fury.
AFAIK, all the Big Heads were for the 500. The guy might have been mistaken about the displacement.

ACE:

Check out page 156 in the book, "Royal Enfield-By Miles The Best", Gordon G. May.

It shows the 1961, "350 Fury Scrambler".

The text says,
"USA Export Model.
346cc single cylinder OHV.  Bore and stroke 70 x 90 mm.  Competition cylinder head and alloy barrel.  3 roller and 1 ball bearing main bearings. 1 3/16 Amal Monoblock carburettor.  N1 - 4 racing magneto.
Provision for a rev counter.  Armstrong rear dampers.  Straight thru exhaust.  No headlight or speedometer.  Raised handlebars.
2 3/4 gallon sports fuel tank.  Black enamel frame and forks.  Finished in Chinese red & chrome."

The cylinder head looks to have the Iron Barrel style valve covers but the cylinder head fins are quite large (as was the one I saw at the show).
The motorcycle in the photo also has a front drum brake, unlike the flat tracker I saw.

There was also a 500 Fury which was also a USA Export Model with the competition "Big Head" cylinder, a 1 1/2 inch intake port with a 1 15/16 intake valve.
These big heads, as you know had valve covers that are angled and look much like the AVL style.

On page 150, there are three photos of the 500cc Big Head which were apparently made from 1959 thru 1961?

Wow! I will have to check that out!
Never even heard of it before. It must be super rare. The big head 500 heads are rare enough.
Thanks for the reference!

Got the 56 Bullet out of the garage and fired it up.  Took a few kicks.  Weak battery I guess.  Have not ridden or even started it since before Thanksgiving.  After it fired, warmed it up nicely and went for a quick 30 minute ride. Rode very well.  Felt better than ever before actually. With the new Bosch coil a few months ago, new NGK plugs and the carb slide now working properly, it runs good. Topped out at 100km, which for me is fast. Felt good holding it there for a few minutes.  Weather here is in the 70's and sunny today and tomorrow.  Will probably get out and ride some more after a few honey do errands in the car.

Some nice cold dense air always makes them run better too.  Glad you had a good ride.

I worked until noon today and the weather was damn near 60  so I took advantage and took the Blackhawk to run some errands.  Took the long way home and stopped to say hi to my old coworkers (now friends) at Advance Auto, apparently the store hasn't been the same since I left.  All in all I had a great day!  Note I'm going to unwind with some Bard's and MMJ in the garage while I fantasize about my Bonneville build.   :D
