When I was a kid in the 80s I remember people still going for the mirror polish on most manifolds and heads.  I remember reading an article in some hot rod mag about roughing up certain spots for better results.  I guess that may have been the turning point for the mainstream hot rodders.  I suppose most of the benefit from the old port and polish jobs came from the porting, and that outweighed whatever harm was done by the polishing.

Almost in the same boat.  The rain has gone, replaced with a sunny cold.  I was planning to ride in despite that, until I saw the current temp was 27F.  That's a bit too cold.  Luckily in Portland, OR the winter is mild enough that I don't bother winterizing any more.  We seem to get a few sunny days here and there and I can sneak out for a short ride.  But we're definitely into the lower mileage months, no doubt about that.

Holy Crap I'm Stoked!

So as many of you know I've been trying to hit The Ton all year long only to achieve a best top speed of 92mph.  Well last night I was sitting in the garage smoking and staring at the Blackhawk when I thought "I wonder what size front sprocket I actually have on this thing".  Low and behold, this summa-bitch only has an 18 tooth sprocket on it!   :o  I haven't been running out of fuel, I've been running out of motor!  This is fantastic news, as the Blackhawk is laying down gobs of torque and I can fit a 21 or 22 tooth sprocket up front which will dramatically change the characteristics of the torque curve and and RPM range.  Looks like I need to balance my checkbook.   ;D

Your bike should be able to easily do the ton with proper fearing. 20T should do the job for you. Are the 500 sprockets the  same?

Had an idea today.  My Chief has 16" wheels and would naturally have to have a taller counter shaft sprocket, so I dug into my crate of parts to have a look.  Good news is that it's a 20 tooth sprocket!  Bad news is someone was running a stretched chain on the bike and the teeth are now curved and distorted.  Worthless.     :(

Cold, Wet, with Fog here in the North Georgia Mountains today. I was only able to walk by my G5 Deluxe, Love & Admire it, getting to my 01 Miata for an errand in town. I was toasty, comfortable & enjoyed the drive, but wished I was on the R.E. none the less.
Best Wishes, Craig McClure

Upper forties here (6°C), but clear sky, dry 'n sunny, healthy air. Joy to be out. Made for a glorious sunset too.   8)
Although in the west of the country heavy fog caused a mass pile up (150 cars).

I'm setting up a small workshop - got my TIG welder (very basic); the argon gas will be delivered tomorrow - invested in a number of tools and I'm busy with my first café racer project (not RE) - damned it is expensive to buy a lathe and milling machine and a bike lift - these may have to wait - any suggestions about the latter 3?
