As much as I hate to admit it, it's really the pits getting old.  With arthritis, it's hard getting up and down, up and down, etc. and working on the garage floor positioning the lift arms "just right" with a lift.

I know the feeling. Had to get out today and do a little torch work on my side stand. As you say getting up and down is a PITA. Well, getting down isn't hard, it's the back up that's difficult. Getting old ain't for wusses!

The whole thing disintegrated last Tuesday after a 600 km ride. There were 18 missing teeth on the sprocket - 8 in a row and the remainder ad hoc. After thightening the chain as stiff as possible we managed to reach home over the last 100 km + at about 40 to 60 kmph. I suspect a stone got jammed between the sprocket and chain.

Didn't need a rock. That OEM chain needs to be looked at every couple of hundred miles. Once it starts to go, it goes fast. The internal bushing are breaking up and that allows the chain to "Stretch" way too much to the point the rollers are riding the top of the sprocket teeth and just ripping them off. The shearing off teeth on these bikes is fairly common. And inordinately expensive compared to just replacing the chain.
Anybody with over a couple of thousand miles on the stock chain and is planning a several hundred mile ride should consider getting a real chain before you leave. It's a pain to have to get a chain and sprockets in the middle of a trip. You will probably be OK on the sprockets if you get a new chain now! When the chain goes, as I said, it goes fast and you don't want to waste your time on the road! The shearing off teeth on these bikes is fairly common. And inordinately expensive compared to just replacing the chain. Don't let it happen to you!
Frankly, AFAIK, the Skid Masters and chains should be replaced before you get home from the shop the first time!

Same thing happened to my rear sprocket, midway through a 500-mile round trip. I limped home the last 100 miles at 40mph, clattering all the way...

I once saw one missing about half its teeth with the other half pretty damaged.  IIRC, it was under 2000 miles but the owner had no idea bike chains needed adjusting, so never looked at it.

Thanks to the gentlemen here I changed mine to a Tsubaki at 3100 miles before I had major problems.  The OE chain was like cooked spaghetti - lots of floppy side play that shouldn't have been there.

Cleaned, lubed and adjusted chain.

Anybody knows how to measure the maximum stretch on the rear chain? Mine had 19k on it.
Thanks

I was bit leery about installing the eyebrow. Thought it might give away my natural color.  :-[ :P

Rulers usually do a pretty good job ;) There are limits published for chain "Stretch" you should be able to find the limits by googling it. You have 19k what? Miles or Km. You can't mean 19,000 miles, or what are you riding? It certainly isn't an Enfield G5 with an OEM chain!
Maybe a C5 with an Oring chain. I haven't heard too many people saying what they get out of those  The easier way to check them is by lifting a link between sprocket teeth. If it lifts 1/2 the height of the sprocket, it's time for replacement. There are also limits on how much the chain should curve when it's laid flat. Mine would curve well over a foot when I junked it.

Today, at ~350 miles, I changed the oil and filter for the first time.  It gave me a good chance to try out my new lift table.

An easy way to tell, just grab the chain at the back sprocket at the 9 o'clock spot and pull away from the sprocket.  If you can see light between the chain and sprocket, it's done.  It's usually hit the published limit before this, but if it's this bad it's REALLY done.  Also, look at the teeth.  If they're obviously hooked in one direction that's an indication that the chain has worn too far.

Well,I pulled the baffle out of my new efi pipe and tried different methods of wrap. Tried rockwool ( took away the bottom end and left the slap) then stainless steel scrubbers(attenuated the midrange slightly) then some fibreglass Matt ( best of the three) and then decided to just leave the baffle out for a while coz it sounds so good ! Bill you were right! Not that I ever doubted you. And I made a new rubber centre stand stopper out of an old boot coz the original kinda split down the middle. Now if only it would stop raining...
